Study Finds Rainforests Bounce Back Much Quicker than Expected
Text and image from this article in the New York Times:
Scientists once thought it would take a century or more for animals to return to deforested land in the tropics. Now, new research has found ecosystems can recover in mere decades. “It’s been a huge surprise for all of us,” said Timo Metz, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles, and first author of the study, published in the journal Nature. “None of us expected it to be so impressive and so quick.” Rainforests have been disappearing at an alarming pace for at least a century, and millions of acres a year are still burned or cut down for logging, farming or ranching, or are lost to wildfires. In 2024, the rate of loss was as fast as 18 soccer fields per minute, adding up to an area nearly the size of Panama. At the same time, hundreds of millions of acres of formerly deforested land are thought to be regrowing. Scientists have generally found that it takes more than a century for trees and plants to fully resemble the old, original pristine forest. It was long assumed that animals would take just as long to return. The new study found that’s not necessarily the case. “The expectation was that the animals would need the forest to come first,” Dr. Metz said. “But surprisingly, many of the animals recover much more quickly than the trees.”
in absolute tears about the pride module at my work
HOLY SHIT GUYS, I WAS INSPIRED BY THIS POST TO TRY MAKE THE SONG AND YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE THE SCREAM I SCRUMPT WHEN I DRAGGED THE TRAINING AUDIO OVER THE BACKING TRACK AND IT LINED UP PERFECTLY
Tempted to actually put this on spotify so I can secretly stream it at work...
Tagging @batshit-auspol because as an Australian you're the only big account I know who might share (sorry).
happy first day of pride everyone
the change from AD to CE feels really emblematic of how surface-level and meaningless the supposed secularization of the western world is
Common Era is definitely preferable over Anno Domini, if only because christ is no lord of mine, but it’s only less christianocentric in that it doesn’t overtly make reference to christ in its title. the benchmark is still the same. you’re still measuring when the common era began using the (supposed) birth of christ, separating history into “the period before jesus” and “the period after jesus”. this conception of history is no less defined by christianity than it was before, except that now it’s easier to ignore because you’ve draped it in a “secular”, “modern” veneer and done nothing to actually unpack the ways in which western society intrinsically centers christianity.
Okay now I need a point in history that could be a benchmark to start counting the years from, and would be a common point for most of the world
What year would it be today?
UTC
Coordinated Universal Time.
The system by which every computer in existence now keeps count of the passing seconds.
And I mean that literally. To a computer system "now" is a number that represents the total number ov seconds that have passed since midnight on the 1st of January, 1960.
1960/01/01 00:00:01 is literally the beginning of time as far as a computer is concerned.
This would be the year 66UTC
I like this idea but if we changed it now then next year would be the year 67 which would make a lot of people angry

"you only deserve food and shelter if you contribute to society" says people living in countries where nobody's labor actually feeds or benefits their neighbors anymore but exclusively benefits the companies keeping the food and shelter behind the artificial paywalls
You're not nomads relying on each other to hunt and gather anymore, you're talking about stocking shelves for fucking wal marts
And even the oldest societies on earth all took care of the elderly or sick anyway
dudes will be like "if you don't Contribute To Society you don't get to live, that's the simple facts" meanwhile their job is like Marketing and Brand Development Specialist
its like strippers and the economy to me
while i'm on the subject of trans people trapped in the prison system, i'd also like to highlight the PCP. if you have the time (and it's not really a huge time commitment if you don't want it to be. you can write once a month!) to be a penpal to a queer person currently imprisoned, it means a lot to maintain connection to the community and to the outside world, especially to those serving life sentences. just remember to read their guidelines before sending your initial email to the org.

you may not know this, but i bet your city or town or municipality has a website. i bet that website has some contact forms or email addresses on it. i bet you can use them to put together a message in about 5 minutes! i bet it’s almost as easy as signing a national petition.
which is to say: i’m noticing, like most other people, that the national level discussion on really important and long overdue issues is flagging. but the internet and news cycle is not the only battleground, and you will be pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to-

it hurts to imagine what jobs would be like in a society where we weren't exploited. vocations that we're proud of that provide for our communities and increase connection. labor coming from meaning and love rather then desperation. capitalism is a perversion of our nature.

Gladio is the most insane thing you will ever learn about
hold on I have to look something up
TLDR: after WWII, the US took nazi war criminals and set them up in sleeper cells all over Europe, “activating” them whenever the “threat of communism” was deemed too much, like in the Years of Lead
oh my god?
Stay-behind - Wikipedia
they’re called stay-behind networks, here’s a list of a bunch. Technically, Gladio was the one that operated in Italy
happy pride my friends
My post about the genocide in the DRC blew up, which I wasn't expecting.
I will admit that my original post used an unintentionally exclusive "we". I was talking about how posts about the DRC really don't make numbers the way posts about, say, Palestine do, but obviously there are people (including Congolese people themselves) who are online and talking about it! I shouldn't have been the one to launch the current widespread discussion: you should put an effort into finding Congolese fundraisers and people speaking about this who are actually from there, like I have been doing.
Here are some fundraisers for Congolese people and organizations you can donate to / spread (thank you @ana-bananya for most of these!)
Agissons Ensembles / Let's Act Together for Congo, an organization made up of youth in Goma who are fundraising for relief - currently at 79%
Fundraiser for Barnabé, a student from Goma, to get kidney disease treatment - currently at 76%
Fundraiser for the Busimba family, refugees in Colorado, to pay their expenses amidst the parents not being able to work - currently at 57%
Team Congo, a Paris-based organization working with the AJPC from Kivu, runs monthly fundraisers to keep themselves afloat. While they've already reached their goal for the month, check in on them in November (I'll make a separate post with a link then - edit: here).
Goma Actif, a volunteer organization helping displaced people in North Kivu - currently at 88%
Fundraiser for education in the community of Luluta - currently at 19%
aabria iyengar tells stories like it's a fucking combat sport
That's why I love her so much.
Google says it’s no different than checking IDs at the airport.
This is just another form of censorship, control of what we can/can't see and engage with, and another means of getting our private information.
Alternative forks of AOSP (Android Open-Source Project) which are not maintained by Google and will not be affected by this:
LineageOS (I use this one)
Graphene OS
Functionally they are virtually identical to stock Android. Android began as an open-source project, and these versions are built off of that.
Fuck Google.

Ok, so what I like about this other than the richly human slice of life 'yep, I've been in directly analogous workplace vicarious drama appreciation' situations, is the mix of equipment.
This is a well to do store. It's busy, it's modern, tidy, and swanky. There's new wood and brushed steel shelving and display settings. There's digital payment infrastructure. But look at the kit - Those four industrial sewing machines are from multiple manufacturers, and generations. There's two old Black and Gold livery Singers, that are 80-120 years old, but well maintained, and two younger post war square casting industrials in a green (50's-60's era) and grey (60's to present) enamel finish. But all are set in white veneered new machine tabletops, but have older black cast metal sewing machine table legs. They are _maintained_ but updated. I wouldn't be surprised if they all have modern servo controlled step motors underneath.
There's modern data infrastructure and screen on the wall, but the value of hand finishing is held, because two people are sitting hand finishing the embroidery highlights to the saris. But the cleaning equipment is modern vacuum cleaners and steamers.
But the man with the iron is using a plain blackbody electric iron from the 1920s, but with renovated electrics (new cable out the back).
What is missing from this clip is the Planned Obsolescence and throwaway culture of the west. Good kit that does it's job is fixed and kept running, because it _lasts_. Depreciation of plant is a fiction developed around planned obsolescence by those who want to sell you another one before the old one has worn out or broken, or who want to stop you fixing it.
