She knows not what the curse may be | Caracalla and the Lady of Shalott
The Lady of Shalott', is a 19th century poem by Alfred Tennyson, based on Arthurian legend of an unnamed woman* who is cursed to never be able to leave her tower, but who falls in love with Lancelot from afar. In the poem, she dies without ever meeting him.
The poem starts out by describing the area where the Lady of Shalott lives:
The lady's home calls to mind the four wings of Ancilley manor, as well as the clear demarcation between the life, and constant change outside the walls, and the everlasting doom within.
This is SUCH a lovely post! Thank you so much for the thought and time put into it.
Sometimes I feel a bit gloomy seeing other works have their metatextual nature recognised and mine dismissed as fluff. I want my readers to be able to read the books without needing to know literary references, I want it to be an enriching element, but when readers think it simply isnβt there and the book isnβt trying to do complicated things, I find myself muttering βIf people think a sentence that blends the Lady of Shalott and Marmion to convey the sense of both hope and doom for an Austen-aspiring heroine trapped in a gothic narrative is easyβ¦β
But then I get to read a post like this, and feel highly seen and complimented. Yes to all of the above highly intentional references, and thereβs more!
Cut to spare you my volubility and extreme spoilers for All Hail Chaosβ¦
Ivor the Ace King (not a typo): I know my friend Count Solas Starost is dead, bc he gave me some magic jewels that would stop glowing if he died.
Also Ivor: Unrelatedly, the Starosts have a truth power that stops glowing if someone's lying.
Count Torhell Merac: The ONLY person who could beat me at archery is Count Starost and he's DEAD. Who even mentioned him? I didn't mention him.
Merel the minstrel, far away: Count Merac is probably boorish and obnoxious and his moustache isn't even that impressive, but he could totally beat anyone in a fight, even the emperor.
Also Ivor the Ace King: the Starosts and Meracs have been enemies for generations. They would always rather kill than help each other. Anyway, my sister Vasilisa, who belongs to neither of these groups, went up to a tower and sang a Starost song for help and the magical tiger of the Meracs immediately rescued her. I have no questions about this.
Okay but wait because YOURE COOKING HEREEEEE
Bard Merel: hello, i am a new character who apperared out of nowhere. and then dissapeared again! haha isnt that funny. Oh no, i wont go to the capital while the raiders are there. Please ignore the hair which is obviously dyed (not to hide my typical Starost hair color. how could you think that). Also i am suspiciously skilled with throwing objects going exactly to the target.
I always wanted to be free and sing and also have romantic/sexual relationships with men. In completely unrelated news, my name is half "Me" like in Count Merac and Rel like in Torhell.
I was coming here to say this but (why am I even surprised) Tumblr is already on it ππͺ
I want my problematic otp of Rae and Key to live long, happy, comfortable lives together were they are allowed to clown around in the most villainous manner to thier hearts content.
However, I am not sure that two people who have struggled so much with the idea that other people are real should be left in charge of the government.
I think they would find it to be difficult and tiresome work.
Hard agree. And neither of them actually want to rule, just as neither of them actually want All That Gold. They just don't want to be powerless or penniless or lonely in the way they have been in the past.
Letβs hope it does bc i have it on good authority that the Golden Cobra and king Marius Valerius will not have much luck producing heirs to the royal line.
Only if it's Marius getting pregnant

Astronauts are so funny man. Here's just a couple of things I've found hilarious from this past week of space stuff:
It's probably already been spread around here enough already, but in case anyone's missed it; 7 hours after launch, commander Reid Wiseman, dealing with tech issues, uttered the generational quote "I have two Microsoft Outlooks and neither one of those are working."
After fixing the issues that were afflicting the onboard toilet, mission specialist Christina Koch (who has quickly become my favourite of the four) laughingly said βIβm the space plumber, Iβm proud to call myself the space plumber.β
On Easter Sunday, the Artemis II crew hosted a makeshift egg hunt, by hiding packets of dehydrated scrambled eggs around their Orion capsule.
The way the crew always makes sure to make it very clear they're in space when doing interviews. From stuff like Wiseman just hanging out floating sideways on screen or Koch letting her hair loose so it can freely span out flowing around her.
While in transit, the crew decided to record a parody of those bad 80s sitcom intros where everyone turns and smiles at the camera.
When the crew reached the furthest point from Earth in the mission, they jokingly clambored over each other in an effort to get to the far side of the capsule, so that they could individually claim to be the furthest person from earth.
At the same time, on the ISS which was at the time on the other side of earth, the 7 astronauts onboard had a light-hearted race to the far side of the station, making jokes about being the furthest humans from Artemis.
On the way back to earth, NASA actually managed to establish an audio call between the crews of the ISS and Artemis II (where they shared the above info), and Koch called one member of the ISS crew, Jessica Meir, her "astro-sister" as the two of them previously spacewalker together in 2019. Meir then responded I'm so happy that we are back in space together, even if we are a few miles apart" (a few here being 230,000).
While Jeremy Hansen was doing an interview, Wiseman and Koch were just in the background swatting the mission mascot (a little moon plush toy named Rise) back and forth between each other.

What if you were on a road trip with your grandma and the car broke down and when you went out to check some guy got out and you punched him in the face because you forgot you picked up a hitchhiker at the last truck stop so you started fighting and you couldn't stop and finally your grandma MADE you stop by BLOWING UP THE FUCKING CAR
What if at some point after you got a new car your grandma asked the hitchhiker to go talk to her in the back so he had to kind of awkwardly crawl back there and something fell out of his pocket and when you picked it up it was gay porn
What if you guys got to a fork in the road and one side looked a little sus but probably fine and the other side was a toll road and your hitchhiker said "this bird I found says we should take the toll road" and you're like. What do you mean the bird says we should take the toll road? Why does the bird even get a vote?

I now have my very own copy of 'The Spear Cuts Through Water' (including signed book plate)! πππ If you haven't already, GO AND READ THIS BOOK. It's a masterpiece. It's definitely one of my top reads of the last few years. The artistry! The word-weaving! This book is storytelling at its finest.
P.S. If anyone can tell me how to get a hold of a hardcover copy of this book that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, I'd be forever in your debt.
There is not nearly enough talk on Tumblr about this EXTRAORDINARY book, so to help spread the love, every few weeks I make it my mission to hunt down as many TSCTW related posts as I can and LOVE them. β€οΈ Keep the content coming, people! π
