Diversity

There are many things that make a story great, but diversity is one of the most important ones. If you don’t include diverse characters then the story feels less alive, and your readers can’t connect to your characters. 

So, what are diverse characters?

POC (people of color)

people from different ethnic groups

people with mental disorders

people with physical disabilities

LGBTQA+ characters

religions

etc.

If you want to include these things in your story, then you have to do your research! RESEARCH PEOPLE! I don’t want to read about/see muslim, female characters who wear hijabs + crop tops!!!

what to do when having writer’s block

Everyone experiences this state of mind at least once in their life and I’m here to help you out!

if you’re stuck at a scene, just write a different one

it can be the ending of the story or a kiss/funny/sad/random scene

anything that comes to your mind

this way you will feel some motivation or even get ideas from the scene you wrote and continue the scene you were stuck at

take a break

go for a walk, cook/bake, draw, read, go out with friends, listen to music, watch a movie, walk your dog, pet your cat/dog/etc, paint your nails, maybe do some research for your story, make a moodboard for your characters, anything you want

taking a break from writing really helps clear your head

write down whatever comes to your mind

if you don’t have an idea how to describe smth, or how the scene could continue/end, just write ANYTHING down as sloppy as possible

later on you will read over what you wrote and have new ideas

Stuttering Characters

I have read some stories where stuttering is shown in a ridiculous way

I know a few people, who stutter

and they don’t speak like this: “O- of course. S- should I-I gi-give you t-the b-b-bag?”

this is bullshit

try to read it out loud and you’ll realize how stupid and unnatural it sounds

people who stutter, don’t repeat the letter from almost every word

they start over with the whole sentence or little pieces of it

like this: “Of- of course. Should...should I...uh..should I give you the...uh, the bag?”

this sounds a lot more natural 

and it’s not necessary to make them stutter through the whole sentence

they can also only repeat  the half of it, or stop at the half of the sentence and start over from the beginning

or you can make them stutter at a specific word, and then show that they’re struggling with it, so they just start over with a different sentence or choose a different word

Person A: Isn’t it weird that we pay money to see other human beings?

Person B: Are you talking about prostitution, the movies, or airplane tickets?

tips for writing bilingual characters

I’ve seen a lot of stories, where bilingual characters are portrayed in a pretty weird way. As I am a bilingual myself, I thought it’d be a good idea to give some writing advice about this topic.

What does bilingual mean anyway?: Someone who grows up, speaking and learning two languages at the same time. For example, your mother speaks german and your father speaks english with you.

there are 3 types of bilinguals

someone who speaks, writes and reads in both langauges well

someone who can speak one of the languages a lot better than writing/reading in the langauge

and someone who can understand what is being said in the other language but can’t speak it well (this is the weaker language)

don’t have your bilingual characters suddenly switch to or say random words from the other language

I speak german and hungarian, and I never ever said words in hungarian if I was talking to someone who speaks german

of course you can have the character forget words in english (aka the weaker language) and say the word in their native language instead (aka stronger language), but make it obvious that they are struggling to remember the word

for example: ,,Yeah, I put the folders in the...uh....fiók....Drawer! I put them in the drawer!’’ I often forget words in english and whisper or just think to myself what the word is called in my native langauge and then remember it in english, but sometimes I don’t lol

also, the mother language doesn’t always have to be the stronger language

only make them switch languages mid-sentence if they’re talking to another bilingual 

Luciano: Everybody shut up. *picks up phone* Hey mom.

Mercedes: HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!

Brooke: Come back to bed.

Jae: *various sex noises*

Gael: Tell her I said hi.
