Lesley Williams, 68, suffered racial discrimination as an Aboriginal mother raising three kids alone. Her daughter, Tammy, 37, is a barrister who has recorded her mum's stories for a new book.
I have just started reading Tammy and Lesley Williams’ Not Just Black and White: a conversation between a mother and daughter and I highly recommend it. The book is written as a conversation between Tammy and Lesley covering Lesley’s experiences growing up Aboriginal in Gympie and reclaiming her stolen Aboriginal wages from the government. Not Just Black and White: a conversation between a mother and daughter is published through UQP.
I recently saw Albert Maysles’ brilliant last documentary, Iris. The film has rightly been described as a love story as it documents the incredible love between Iris and her husband of over sixty years, Carl. Sadly Carl has recently passed away aged 100. Together Carl and Iris founded the textile business Old World Weavers which saw them travel the world and expand their impressive collection of textiles, art and everything in between.
Highly recommend seeing Iris, it is a visual feast but it is the love between Carl and Iris that is truly incredible. Nothing short of inspiring.

For the past two weeks, I have carried Sandra Bland with me everywhere I go. At first, it was a smiling image of her that haunted my thoughts; she is dressed in what looks to be a black blazer and white blouse, one of her baby locs creeping out of place and sitting squarely on her forehead. She’s wearing big earrings, the sort that you get from an African fair. Here, Sandra (I can’t refer to her as “Bland,” we are too intimately connected now) looks like she makes #BlackLivesMatter videos and goes to sorority chapter meetings in serious heels that replace flats at the door and that don’t stick around long after adjournment. She is one of us, one of ours, absolutely.
