Buffy the Vampire Slayer – 7.11: Showtime
You know that I will always be there for you, right?
“…and my sister is a Vampire Slayer, her best friend is a witch who went bonkers and tried to destroy the world, um, I actually used to be a little ball of energy until about two years ago when some monks changed the past and made me Buffy’s sister and for some reason, a big klepto. My best friends are Leticia Jones, who moved to San Diego because this town is evil, and a floppy eared demon named Clem.”

Did you know there is now a children's book about abortion?
Available in both English and Spanish, "Let's Talk About Abortion" is the first of its kind: a children's book explaining abortion in simple, age-appropriate, non-judgmental language.
I finally got the chance to read it for myself and I cannot recommend it enough.
It starts out by defining an abortion as "when someone decides to stop growing their pregnancy" (notice the non-gendered language used! Another great thing!). It talks about different reasons why someone may get one (their doctor says their health is in danger if they continue the pregnancy or they like their family just the way it is) and says that "only you know what your body needs" (a great way to segway into talking about body autonomy more generally, which is something we should definitely prioritize talking to kids about).
It talks about how people get abortions without naming body parts/without showing pictures of those body parts (different parents feel different ways about showing children body parts or naming certain body parts so I wanted to acknowledge this in my post). (I PERSONALLY feel like children should know the names of their body parts but I know that some parents are afraid that they will, like, repeat the word "vagina" or "uterus" at school and the child will get in trouble with the principal.)
In light of the political climate we are in, this book could use all the support it can get. So if you know any parent, library worker, auncle, "chosen/God" family members who might want to know this book exists, please tell them about it.
The children may not know about the destruction of Roe V Wade (but maybe some of them do!) and this book might be a way to introduce them to abortion and get them prepared for a brighter future than the one we have now, one where abortions are once again protected by the government. The same way as picture books about Earth/the climate can get children prepared for a brighter future where the climate crisis is no more. After all, don't we want to raise informed + hopeful children? (Yes, the answer is yes.)
