I’ve waited for this album for a long time—with the kind of anticipation you feel for something beautiful, mixed with the fear of being disappointed. All of it seasoned with a pinch of nostalgia for the band.
Now, the album is finally out, it didn’t disappoint my expectations—in fact, in some ways, it surpassed them, and Damiano made it extremely clear, even more than in the past, that Måneskin will return. So, I’m happy x 2. But let’s talk about the album itself, under the cut for those who have the patience to read…
Overall, it’s a pop album (duh!), with vintage and indie touches, plenty of ballads, and a few danceable tracks. The live versions we’ve heard so far hint at a more-rock take on these songs. Good!
It’s so obvious that Damiano is happy with himself and this project that I’m happy for him—especially since, so far, the audience reception has been very good.
Of course, there are always those who, even before listening, go, "anyone could have written this."
I might even agree with that… 30%, except I’m not sure that’s even a problem. We talk so much about not needing to live under unnecessary pressure, yet we only consider a product valid if it’s an absolute masterpiece/milestone? Come on!
The sound isn’t particularly original, true—but people said the same about early Måneskin, rock and all. Does it have to be groundbreaking? Hats off if it were, but absolute originality isn’t what makes an album great—and very few artists achieve that, especially in pop. Besides, this is Damiano’s first album.
Besides, while my love for Måneskin is total and visceral, I wouldn't call any of their albums a masterpiece either. Did this prevent me going crazy for them? Hell no! Again, this is not a problem. If we let ourselves enjoy only 100%excellence, we're in for constant disappointment.
For me, the personality and uniqueness of Funny Little Fears lie in two things (+1):
The voice – Damiano’s voice is truly one-of-a-kind and unmistakable, and he just keeps improving. It’s honestly impressive—it makes my heart race. He has a gift, and that is genuinely unique.
The lyrics – It’s crystal clear that they come from the heart. They’re deeply personal and also relatable. A couple of songs hit me like a slap in the face. Not many writers can express themselves with such sincerity, and it’s wild to me that Damiano doesn’t get more recognition for it.
+1 – The poor guy is hopelessly in love, and it shows. I’ve almost never seen a singer so far gone 🤣. And while such intense love kinda scares me, Damiano just makes me feel tender.
Now, the songs:
Voices – I completely underestimated it, but it wormed its way into my brain and stayed. I don’t know how to get it out. Help!
Next Summer – Love at first listen, from the very first snippet. And that background guitar? Chef’s kiss!
Zombie Lady – Did the guy just reference Tim Burton?? And then people say I shouldn’t love him madly? A happy, uplifting song—not to mention the secret guest. Is cute-goth a thing? Now it is.
The Bruise – It hasn’t struck me yet, but I appreciate the intimate atmosphere and, again, the guitar.
Sick of Myself – Same as above.
Angel – Super romantic but not saccharine. Some have compared it to The Beatles’ vibe—I agree.
Tango – One of my absolute favorites. A little gem—fun, romantic, it put a huge smile on my face. Can’t wait to hear it live in Milan. Help me say adorable!
Born with a Broken Heart – Another one I find just okay on the album, but it improves a lot live.
Tangerine – I love the sophisticated, retro atmosphere. Now I get why Damiano was dressing like a ’50s actor for a while 🤣
Mars – One of my favorite gut-punches. It literally starts with "Rock and roll has died again." People need stopping being mean to Damiano or so help me god! Musically, one of the best. Chapeau!
The First Time – Another adorable one! Imagine being that in love. I don't know if facepalming or starting vomit rainbows.
Perfect Life – Great chorus, not sure about the rest—I’ll need to listen to it a few more times.
Silverlines – Different, sumptuous, I loved it instantly. Still one of the best.
Solitude (No One Understands Me) – When Damiano writes with such honesty, I can’t help but love him, like, four times more. As an introvert, I don’t know how he can be so vulnerable in front of the whole world. This song feels so real it hurts. I want to punch the people who made Damiano feel this way😤

Hey hey, as a librarian, can I just say don’t pace yourself at the library. I get a lot of customers saying “oh I shouldn’t get too many books out at once” but like you should!!!! Max out your card, take everything we have on a subject you’re interested in, make a book fort in your home. We love that shit! It doesn’t matter if you read them or not; just take them for an adventure and bring them back whenever they’re due!
For public libraries, one of the ways we secure funding year to year is lending. Governments don’t want to fund more books if they’re not being used and the way we measure use is by issues. Regardless of whether you read it or not, whether you have it for a day or a month, if you issue it to your library card, we get the stats! It makes the library look good!
Help your local library; get books out even if you know you can’t read them all!
