currently watching: after seeing everyone get excited about agggtm i have finallyyyyy started watching it. i really loved the books, so it is fun to see it be transformed for the show. i may have watched the whole of season one yesterday >_<

current obsession: my forever obsession of twenty one pilots. you will watch me thinking about them for most of the day. also i've been really obsessed with dissecting the poetry i am reading at the moment as i finished 'crush' by richard siken last month.

currently reading: i've just finished 'tree and leaf' and now started 'smith of wootton major' by tolkien. i've got a little collection of his works in one book and i am enjoying it immensely.

currently working on: managing my socialising alongside my new job. i struggle to balance everything in my life and usually just end up doing one thing until i burn out :/ but hopefully i can find a better divide of everything this time.

currently wearing: shorts and a t-shirt and my socks have little ferns on them - they are very cute

last search: umm. i guess technically it was me loading up tumblr, because i'm on desktop. but before that i was looking for hotels to stay at for some upcoming concerts i am going to.

favourite flower: right now i should say sunflower, because i am in the middle of a tallest sunflower competition with my family. but i do love a dandelion. they are so bright and fun and then you get to blow all their seeds away! also bluebells are really pretty.

last song: it might have been Music by F.R David? i'm not sure because it was on a cd in the car (i just got home from a trip with my parents) and i can't check right now lol.

currently watching: i haven't been watching anything lately (bc Life) but I do have Arcane and Kimetsu no Yaiba unfinished, and I'd like to get back to them at some point! I've also watched a couple episodes of the Chosen here and there

current obsession: crochet! I'm making a blanket for my little sister and I'm so close to finishing it! I've made sooo many granny squares and now I'm almost at the point where I can start joining them :)

currently reading: i'm in recovery from a months long reading slump and had a ton of time to read on the trip, so this weekend I've finished All My Friends Are Superheroes by Andrew Kaufman and I'm in the middle of the Defy the Night trilogy by Brigid Kemmerer. I've finished the first book (Defy the Night) and started the second this afternoon.

currently working on: not overworking myself. I've had a pretty intense past couple of months combining work and uni, and it was getting too much. I've made the decision to leave my final project for next year and I'm trying really hard not to let it bother me (spoilers: it depends on the day).

currently wearing: white jeans and a blue and white striped shirt (blouse? i don't know the difference. it's pretty). And grey socks with polka dots :)

last search: i'm also on desktop so it was technically tumblr, but before that i searched for pictures of an octahedron bc i was talking about math with my mom. (i do have a math degree, okay. it's normal)

favourite flower: sunflower all the way! it's been my favorite flower for years and years. if it's yellow and has a sun motif then it's gonna be my favorite, that's just how it goes. (yes, i loved yellow and sunflowers and sun motifs and was studying topology before i listened to Trench. no i can't explain how it happened)

Earlier today, I served as the “young woman’s voice” in a panel of local experts at a Girl Scouts speaking event. One question for the panel was something to the effect of, “Should parents read their daughter’s texts or monitor her online activity for bad language and inappropriate content?”

I was surprised when the first panelist answered the question as if it were about cyberbullying. The adult audience nodded sagely as she spoke about the importance of protecting children online.

I reached for the microphone next. I said, “As far as reading your child’s texts or logging into their social media profiles, I would say 99.9% of the time, do not do that.”

Looks of total shock answered me. I actually saw heads jerk back in surprise. Even some of my fellow panelists blinked.

Everyone stared as I explained that going behind a child’s back in such a way severs the bond of trust with the parent. When I said, “This is the most effective way to ensure that your child never tells you anything,” it was like I’d delivered a revelation.

It’s easy to talk about the disconnect between the old and the young, but I don’t think I’d ever been so slapped in the face by the reality of it. It was clear that for most of the parents I spoke to, the idea of such actions as a violation had never occurred to them at all.

Around age 13, I tried to express to my mother that I thought I might have clinical depression, and she snapped at me “not to joke about things like that.” I stopped telling my mother when I felt depressed.

Around age 15, I caught my mother reading my diary. She confessed that any time she saw me write in my diary, she would sneak into my room and read it, because I only wrote when I was upset. I stopped keeping a diary.

Around age 18, I had an emotional breakdown while on vacation because I didn’t want to go to college. I ended up seeing a therapist for - surprise surprise - depression.

Around age 21, I spoke on this panel with my mother in the audience, and afterwards I mentioned the diary incident to her with respect to this particular Q&A. Her eyes welled up, and she said, “You know I read those because I was worried you were depressed and going to hurt yourself, right?”

TL;DR: When you invade your child’s privacy, you communicate three things:

You do not respect their rights as an individual.

You do not trust them to navigate problems or seek help on their own.

You probably haven’t been listening to them.
