Sofia’s parents divorced when she was young after her father was exposed for having an affair with an underaged intern at his company. After the scandal, she was left with no choice but to live with her mother, whose addiction only made things harder.
Growing up, she was constantly surrounded by the random men her mother brought home from bars or blind dates, each one quickly labeled as the “love of her life.” A week later though, reality always looked the same her mother passed out on the couch, empty bottles scattered everywhere, random pills covering the coffee table, and the lingering smell of cigarette smoke filling the living room.
Seeing her mother so hurt and lost made Sofia believe that love always ended in destruction. Because of that, she promised herself she would never let a boy have control over her heart ever.

Sofia met Gunner in eighth grade, right after she got caught smoking in the bathroom. Gunner had been brought in while she was waiting for her mom to pick her up, and the two of them clicked almost instantly.
Sofia dreamed of becoming a producer and working in music, while Gunner wanted to rap and write lyrics, so everything between them just seemed to fit naturally
As time went on, they grew inseparable constantly hanging out, skipping school, smoking, and getting into dumb trouble together.
Though their relationship shifted a year later when they both drunkenly hooked up at a house party. Sofia just assumed it was a mistake and never brought it up until a few weeks later they hooked up again, this time completely sober.
Not wanting to break the promise she made to herself, Sofia made Gunner swear that whatever was happening between them would stay strictly casual, no labels, no attachment, and definitely no confessions of love.

Everything was normal between them, nothing changed in their friendship. They stayed casual for a while, and when Gunner moved to LA to pursue his music career, Sofia moved with him. They lived together for a few months before Sofia eventually saved enough money to get her own apartment. Even after moving out, they stayed close, and although Gunner had started working with other producers, Sofia still helped him on a few songs here and there.
Things started to change that same year when Gunner began dating the model Mazzy Joya. From the start, Mazzy couldn’t stand Sofia. She hated how close the two were, how Gunner always seemed to trust Sofia more than anyone else, and especially the history they shared. What bothered her most was that no matter how much time passed, Sofia still had a place in Gunner’s life that nobody else could seem to replace.
Sofia could feel how wrong the timing was. Gunner had a relationship, and even if things between them had always blurred the line between friendship and something more, this was different now. It stopped being harmless closeness and turned into something hidden, messy, and constantly on edge.
Gunner didn’t make it any easier. He’d act like nothing had changed, like Mazzy wasn’t a factor the moment he was with Sofia. But the second he left, the reality of it all would snap back in.
And Mazzy wasn’t oblivious for long.
At first it was small things, questions that felt pointed, looks that lingered too long whenever Sofia’s name came up, the way she’d go quiet whenever Gunner got distracted by a message. But the suspicion built fast. There was only so long something like that could stay hidden when it was already fragile to begin with.
Sofia knew she should’ve stepped back. That was the clearest thought in all of it. But knowing something and actually doing it were two different things, especially when every time they were alone, it felt like nothing else existed outside that moment.
When she was with Gunner, it didn’t feel like the rest of her life existed in the same space.
The stress from her part time work as a producer and modeling faded into something distant, almost irrelevant, the moment she was around him. Even the heavier things worrying about her mother, the pressure she carried day to day seemed to quiet down like they were being muted in real time.
With him, everything shifted. It wasn’t loud or dramatic, it was just immediate. Like her mind had nowhere else to go except the present moment, except him. And that was exactly what made it so hard to step away from gunner.
He was like a high no drug could replace.

A/N: this has been in the drafts for a whilleee and i finally locked in and finished it (after changing basically everything cus i hated it and it made zero sense) this is also my first oc FIC on here so lmk if you like it!! It was originally gonna be a y/n fic but halfway through i decided i hated it and wanted it to be an oc😊😊 please comment anything you want to see or if I made any mistakes please tell me!!!
