Flawed characters are the ones we root for, cry over, and remember long after the story ends. But creating a character who’s both imperfect and likable can feel like a tightrope walk.
1. Flaws That Stem From Their Strengths
When a character’s greatest strength is also their Achilles' heel, it creates depth.
Strength: Fiercely loyal.
Flaw: Blind to betrayal or willing to go to dangerous extremes for loved ones.
“She’d burn the whole world down to save her sister—even if it killed her.”
2. Let Their Flaws Cause Problems
Flaws should have consequences—messy, believable ones.
Flaw: Impatience.
Result: They rush into action, ruining carefully laid plans.
“I thought I could handle it myself,” he muttered, staring at the smoking wreckage. “Guess not.”
3. Show Self-Awareness—or Lack Thereof
Characters who know they’re flawed (but struggle to change) are relatable. Characters who don’t realize their flaws can create dramatic tension.
A self-aware flaw: “I know I talk too much. It’s just… silence makes me feel like I’m disappearing.”
A blind spot: “What do you mean I always have to be right? I’m just better at solving problems than most people!”
4. Give Them Redeeming Traits
A mix of good and bad keeps characters balanced.
Flaw: They’re manipulative.
Redeeming Trait: They use it to protect vulnerable people.
“Yes, I lied to get him to trust me. But he would’ve died otherwise.”
Readers are more forgiving of flaws when they see the bigger picture.
5. Let Them Grow—But Slowly
Instant redemption feels cheap. Characters should stumble, fail, and backslide before they change.
Early in the story: “I don’t need anyone. I’ve got this.”
Midpoint: “Okay, fine. Maybe I could use some help. But don’t get used to it.”
End: “Thank you. For everything.”
The gradual arc makes their growth feel earned.
6. Make Them Relatable, Not Perfect
Readers connect with characters who feel human—messy emotions, bad decisions, and all.
A bad decision: Skipping their best friend’s wedding because they’re jealous of their happiness.
A messy emotion: Feeling guilty afterward but doubling down to justify their actions.
A vulnerable moment: Finally apologizing, unsure if they’ll be forgiven.
7. Use Humor as a Balancing Act
Humor softens even the most prickly characters.
Flaw: Cynicism.
Humorous side: Making snarky, self-deprecating remarks that reveal their softer side.
“Love? No thanks. I’m allergic to heartbreak—and flowers.”
8. Avoid Overdoing the Flaws
Too many flaws can make a character feel unlikable or overburdened.
Instead of: A character who’s selfish, cruel, cowardly, and rude.
Try: A character who’s selfish but occasionally shows surprising generosity.
“Don’t tell anyone I helped you. I have a reputation to maintain.”
9. Let Them Be Vulnerable
Vulnerability adds layers and makes flaws understandable.
Flaw: They’re cold and distant.
Vulnerability: They’ve been hurt before and are terrified of getting close to anyone again.
“It’s easier this way. If I don’t care about you, then you can’t leave me.”
10. Make Their Flaws Integral to the Plot
When flaws directly impact the story, they feel purposeful rather than tacked on.
Flaw: Their arrogance alienates the people they need.
Plot Impact: When their plan fails, they’re left scrambling because no one will help them.
Flawed but lovable characters are the backbone of compelling stories. They remind us that imperfection is human—and that growth is possible.

With a heavy sigh, Eric pushed open the door to his apartment, his steps dragging along the floor.
“I’m back,” he called out, not bothering to look up and check for his roommates, instead kicking off his shoes and just chucking them next to Sunwoo’s cleats that were still full of grass because he never bothered to clean them no matter how often Eric asked him to.
“Hey, what's wrong?” Kevin asked from his spot on the sofa, pausing the movie that had been playing.
“Nothing, just a long day,” Eric shrugged it off as he walked past Kevin and into the kitchen to grab something to drink. He really didn’t feel like talking.
“Get cleaned up, dinner is ready in a bit,” Hyunjae smiled at him, gently ruffling Eric’s already messy hair.
“Not hungry.” Taking out a mango juice from the fridge, Eric turned his back to the kitchen and Hyunjae, ready to just go to his room and not talk to anyone for a couple of hours - maybe he’d make some ramen at midnight when he’d eventually get hungry.
“Eric?”
“I’m fine! Just tir-”
Eric didn’t get to finish, running face-first into a very naked chest.
“Well hello there,” Sunwoo mused, wrapping his arms around Eric’s waist.
“Not in the mood,” the other sighed, turning his head so Sunwoo’s lips only met his cheek.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong I’m just-”
“Just tired, my ass,” Sunwoo interrupted him, “What’s up?”
“I told you it’s nothing!”
“You threw your shoes next to Sunwoo’s cleats and didn’t even complain about the mess,” Kevin butted in, his voice soft as he came up behind Eric, “Talk to us.”
“I told you it’s nothing,” Eric tried again, weakly trying to fight Sunwoo’s grip on him.
“It’s the test, right?” Hyunjae asked, “You were supposed to get the results today.”
When Eric kept quiet, simply staring forward, Kevin put two and two together. “You scored badly.”
“Failed,” Eric choked out before falling forward into Sunwoo, all tension leaving his body.
“Baby~”
“Don’t baby me. I fucked that up royally. Despite you all-”
“Hey, hey,” Hyunjae shushed Eric, “It’s going to be-”
“Going to be okay?” Eric snorted, “I literally- This was my last chance to fix my grade and my mind went completely blank and- I need to pass this course and now that I won’t it’ll throw me back and-”
“Hey, Eric. Baby. Breathe,” Kevin tried to stop Eric from spiraling.
“No, I- I-”
Before he could get another word out, Sunwoo tilted his head up and pressed their lips together in a sweet kiss, “He told you to breathe,” Sunwoo whispered before he went in for another kiss that Eric eagerly returned, his hands creeping around Sunwoo’s waist where he had his towel tucked in.
“Getting handsy after one kiss?” Hyunjae chuckled, covering Eric’s hand before he could undo the towel, “Thought you weren’t in the mood.”
“You can’t blame him,” Kevin mused, walking around the two younger ones to drape himself over Sunwoo’s back and press a kiss to his pulse, “You shouldn’t be allowed to walk around the apartment like this, we had this discussion.”
“You’re saying one thing and doing another,” Sunwoo sighed, letting Eric rope him into another kiss.
“Less talking,” he complained, “I need this right now.”
“Okay baby,” Hyunjae smiled, releasing his grip on Sunwoo’s towel, which promptly fell to the floor, “On your knees.”

“Eric cuts himself off with an exasperated sigh.
“Why are you so surprised?” Kevin shrugs, casually sipping his coffee, “It’s not like you couldn’t hear us. I mean… walls are thin.”
“It’s just— I thought— Kevin what am I meant to do with this information?”
Sunwoo shuffles into the kitchen as Eric is seemingly questioning his entire existence. He drapes himself over Eric, rubbing his face against Eric’s shoulder lightly. Clearly, he had just woken up despite it being nearly 2 pm.
“What information?” Sunwoo’s voice comes out gravely and laced with sleepiness still.
“That Hyunjae hyung and I fuck.” Kevin comments casually.
Sunwoo shifts to stand on the side of Eric Kevin, who wasn’t occupying.
“Oh, I thought that was common knowledge. I mean we fuck and they fuck. Nothing new in this apartment.”
Eric is stunned, to say the least, “What do you mean nothing new?!”
“I mean…” Sunwoo chuckles, stealing a sip of Kevin’s coffee, “You probably didn’t notice but Hyunjae hyung walked in on us a few days ago… you were probably too busy with your mouth stuffed though.”
Eric groans and rather quickly disappears into his bedroom. Now alone with his thoughts, all he can do is spiral. Why did he think living with his best friend (with benefits) and two of his other very hot friends would be a good idea? Especially now. He shares a wall with Kevin. The elder has never been subtle about when he has a guest over, he just didn’t think said guest would be his fourth roommate.
A soft knock sounds on his door before he can think too deeply about the dynamics that could go into their relationship. Hyunjae pops his head through the door when Eric gives the go-ahead.
“What’s got Kevin and Sunwoo giggling out there? And why do I know it’s at your expense?” He teases.
Eric groans again and flops back on his bed with his hand over his face, “Kevin hyung… told me about your arrangement… I don’t know how to cope with it.”
The bed dips beside him and Hyunjae gently pulls Eric’s hand from his face. The elder’s big doe eyes sparkle as they silently look at each other for a few moments. Hyunjae’s hand never lets his rather light hold on Eric’s wrist go. He rubs light circles around the knob of his wrist only making Eric’s brain short-circuit more.
“It didn’t make you uncomfortable, did it?” Hyunjae questions with sincere worry.
“N-No! No um… it didn’t… it’s just—“ he cuts himself off with another groan, “it’s making me think more than I probably should.”
“Are you and Sunwoo exclusive? Is that what's causing this sudden panic?”
“Wha— did you— oh.”
“Oh?” Hyunjae leans down ever so slightly closer to Eric’s face, “Sunwoo tell you how I caught you on Tuesday? I must say… bold of you to get your throat fucked in the living room.” He teases again.
Eric tries to hide his face again but Hyunjae tightens his grip.
“Eric…” Hyunjae nearly whispers.
“Yeah?”
“Can I—“
“Yes.”
The chuckle that escapes Hyunjae sends shivers down Eric’s spine, “I didn’t even ask the question.”
“Just fucking kiss me.”
Hyunjae leans down fully, storing his body weight on his forearm to capture Eric in an immediately heated kiss. It’s rough. Teeth clashing, spit dribbling down his chin due to the sloppiness, everything about this kiss just makes him want to learn more about Hyunjae and Kevin in this context. When Hyunjae finally releases his wrist, his hands fly to tangle in Hyunjae’s curly hair earning him a low noise of appreciation.
Hyunjae shifts to wedge one knee between Eric’s legs. He slides a hand under Eric’s shirt, holding onto his waist tightly. The younger immediately starts grinding against his thigh and drags Hyunjae back into a kiss.
“You’re a needy puppy today, huh?” Sunwoo calls from the doorway, “One mention of our other roommates fucking and you needed a taste?”
“Sunwoo,” Eric whines as Hyunjae starts littering kisses down his throat, “I need—“
“Kevin hyung!” Sunwoo calls before Eric can finish his plea.
Kevin casually strolls down the hall, looking at his phone. A whimper escapes Eric when Hyunjae bites a sensitive spot, making Kevin snap his head up from the device.
“Oh? Is this finally happening?”
“Need you,” Eric gasps as Hyunjae sucks a small mark into his collarbone.
“Don’t forget whose thigh you’re getting off on.” Hyunjae says softly against his ear.
“Need all of you… please hyungs?”
Sunwoo chuckles, pulling Kevin into the room with him, “I can’t say no to such a sweet puppy, can I?”
Rarepair refers to a rare pairing inside a fandom. This means that a pairing that someone ships does not have a lot of fanart or fanfiction about them or anything at all.
While crackships are always rarepairs, these rare pairings can make a lot of sense in canon, but they are just not that popular. But they often also refer to shipping characters that do not interact in canon at all, maybe not even know each other in the source material.
There are no exact numbers on when a pairing is considered a rarepair but some characteristics are that the tag on AO3 does not have a lot of hits and that most of the entries were written by the same person.
Shipping a rarepair can be frustrating, when you feel like you are alone in your love for a pairing, but it can also be fun to be able to shape the pairing together with two, three other shippers however you want them, because you basically own the ship by solely contributing to it.
