This is how he found himself in Diagon alley a few days before the party. He had taken it upon himself to get all the supplies for said party. This meant he had organized the alcohol and a stop at Honeydukes. He was headed down towards Weasley’s Wheezes when he felt himself bump into someone. “Hey watch where your… Oh hey party at my place you should come. You’re coming right?” He asked the person he had bumped into.

“James, hey!” Alice replied. She felt her face turn a little bit brighter red. She looked at him wide eyed for a second before her eyes darted down to her phone laying screen down on the floor. “Oh, crap.” She knelt down to grab it and answered his hurried question.

“Umm well Jonah keeps asking me to be there to watch him just in case he gets too drunk,” she sighed and stood up, “but I’m absolutely not gonna go just to babysit him. Who does he think I am, our mother?” She gave a nervous chuckled.

Why are you nervous, Alice? He was your friend before you had feelings for him, idiot.

“Are you shopping for the party right now?” Alice asked, noticing that he seemed to be alone. “Don’t Jarrett and Jonah ever help you with anything?” She jokingly questioned.

It felt surreal standing in the streets of Diagon Alley, with bags over her arms rather than being charmed back to the Greengrass estate by her mother. She seemed to feel all those other Diagon Alley days as she stood there on the cobbled street. Nostalgia didn’t suit her, however. When she was here in a year, it would be in a new life and a new world and days like this wouldn’t matter.

She didn’t want to think about the list of textbooks in the pocket of her robes just yet, and in an effort to distract herself from her strangely emotional thoughts she wandered into the curio shop near where she stood. The bell above the door rang softly as she entered, and her shoulders tensed in response. This was not exactly the sort of place that a Greengrass would frequent, but the collection of delicate silver jewelry she had seen through the window had caught her eye.

She was distracted by the delicate detailing on the bracelet she was examining, and she hadn’t been aware of the other person in the store until she felt them close to her. Chagrined, she scolded herself for not paying attention. Outside, however, she was as calm and collected as ever.

“Snooping isn’t very becoming,” she drawled without looking up from the delicate jewelry. “Otherwise, you can look when I’m done.”

Roaming through the aisles, Alice ended up next to the girl who had just walked in. She was handling a beautiful bracelet and when Alice tried to get a better look at the rest of the set, the girl spoke and startled her. It wasn’t the fact that the girl noticed her that threw Alice off, but who the girl was. 

Eva Greengrass.

Now, Alice had never had a problem with her fellow school mates before, but this one definitely had a problem with her. She never understood why, but Eva had never seemed to like her and things got especially bad in the middle of her first year. For the most part, Alice stayed clear of Eva.

“Oh. I.. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to snoop, but that bracelet just looked so lovely. I, uh, I guess we both have great taste, right?” Alice stuttered her way through the reply. She didn’t usually get nervous, but Eva Greengrass was a whole different situation. 

So this is what it felt like when time was against you. People on the streets passed by too slowly, and the sun set far too quickly. As soon as you felt warm, the moon was overhead, and the clock was reminding you that this silver hour, a sliver after midnight, was no longer a sign of longevity but a marker of another day dead. 

Maybe he was being dramatic, but Jarrett doubted it. As much as he wanted to get on with the rest of his life, he knew that this was the last summer in which he could simply enjoy life. He had no obligations (save the supplies list shoved deeply in his pocket). This was a summer of pure want, and while he had certainly made a few memories, he never wanted it to end. One morning, he decided to go to Paris. He rode a Muggle train across the Channel, hopped off, spoke broken French (and even that was kind), and fell asleep by the Seine (only to be woken up by a homeless wanderer at 3am). The day after, he took the Flu to James’ house, convinced Jonah to join, and made the marvelous decision to mingle alcohol and quaffles. 

Today, he wanted to explore. He’d taken off into the heart of London, intent on dragging someone into his adventures across the capital. Stranger, friend, he didn’t really care. He wanted to be a part of the culture that had lost him his home and inheritance, and he wanted to enjoy it. He wanted to forget that he was graduating this year, that afterwards he had to put his life on course based upon need rather than desire. 

The thought churned his stomach, and Jarrett made up for it by stepping up onto the bridge railing. It was a thirty foot drop to his right and a four foot step back to civilization to his left. He stepped forward, reveling in being on the cusp of something. Then he caught eye of neon yellow, a blob that was content with moseying through the crowd until someone was standing head and torso above it. Jarrett took to running along the railing, dodging columns with a light step until reaching the end of the bridge. He assimilating with the crowd, making a path of his own. Tourists cleared out of his way one by one, but there was someone with a paper in their hand and their eyes upon the cityscape. Jarrett’s shoulder clipped theirs, and without thinking, he grabbed their hand, tugging them along with him. 

“C’mon, keep up!” he urged, ducking into a side alley. 

Alice chose to leave the comforts of the wizarding world and venture off into muggle territory. It’s not that she had never gone to London before, but she had never gone on her own. It put her a bit on edge, but she was on a mission. While wandering around Hogwarts, Alice had found tons of old photos in a dusty old chest, but they were the non-moving/non-talking/muggle type og photos. They each had delicate handwriting with the date and location of time and place the picture was taken so why not go and take photos of her own.

Just as she had located the tall silver building, Alice felt a hand drag her through the crowds of people and the photo flitted off into a group of overly enthusiastic tourists. The 

 “What in god’s...” Alice took a moment to catch her breath. The person had led them to an alley and after taking a few more breaths, Alice finally took in who had brought her to this place. Her brother’s dumb friend, Jarrett.
