It's because they can't fathom their male protagonist being so deeply affected by a woman's character, since women are to be lusted for and kept as props for their little domestic fantasies but never truly respected or admired as individuals. The ancient greeks were more honest about this stuff because they understood that patriarchy and male/male affection went hand in hand.

Best thing about Reigen is the way his rationality is so deeply rooted in societal conventions that he sees a bunch of angry psychics and thinks "These guys who are fighting against middle school children are just adults who didn't grow up". Instead of thinking they're dangerous, he immediately jumps to the conclusion that they're unreasonable and, because of that, they can defeat him. All public universities in my country admit and reject people based on their score on a national standardized test, which features an English module that's worth 1/5 of your final score. This makes not having at least a basic level of English proficiency a major barrier for accessing higher education but yeah, I could have "just... not learned your language" I guess, yeah.

i know its mostly contrarianism, but the rates at which mosquitoes breed in major cities in the tropics is just as destabilising to local ecosystems lol. surprisingly, every shallow pond, sewer and garden in new delhi was not meant to breed mosquitoes.

So what I think is that there's this default belief in patriarchy that men are superior to women and therefore the "masculine" sphere is superior to the "feminine" sphere. And so, as feminists have fought to expand the number of allowable female activities, men (on the aggregate over generations) have retreated from those activities because they're now seen as "feminine", and so partaking in them is incommensurate with their belief in their own superiority. And, unfortunately, as this has progressed, this has resulted in a lot of men sectioning themselves off from, frankly, everything that actually makes being alive worthwhile. It's a misery spiral, and the only way out is to abandon male supremacy.

Anyway, this is by way of explaining why we, as a society, now equate masculinity with belligerent stupidity but still enshrine it as a good thing.
