Addition to the question about James Hamilton Jr’s age that I talked about in detail here !

For anyone who doesn’t want to read that whole thing but is still interested in it: Basically we don’t know James’s age for sure, just like with Alex and there’s sources saying he might actually have been the younger brother.

I stated in that post that Gertrude Atherton makes James five years younger than Alex in her novel The Conqueror (that she did do a lot of research for because she originally wanted to write a biography) and that it’s unclear where she got that from or if she just decided she liked it that way. It’s prior to the discovery of the Probate Court Record after all.

Turns out that since at that point Rachel was thought to be way younger than she was, with Atherton having been the one to find the burial record with the incorrect age (if you don’t know, the record incorrectly has her die at age 32), and since Rachel had been married to Levine before Hamilton’s birth of course, Atherton assumed that she could not have been with James Hamilton (Sr) for very long prior to AHam’s birth. In fact she suggests that they were together only starting 1756 after the death of Rachel’s mother and her inheriting of her mother’s slaves. (She says so in her autobiography “Adventures of a Novelist, read here) This of course would have made it impossible for James Jr to have been older than Alexander and explains why Atherton thought he had to be younger. As for the five years specifically, it does seem like that’s just a number she picked.

I also suggested that Allan McLane Hamilton who claims James Jr to have been the younger brother as well might have taken this information from Atherton as he thanks her for her research (unless he knew something we don’t, like that letter from Alexander to James that he mentions but doesn’t print ughhh). If that is the case, the reasoning would be the same. But we now know of course that Rachel was older, met James Hamilton way earlier than 1756 and that she definitely had children with him before 1757 so the reasoning doesn’t hold up anymore.
