The 2024 budget is $118,000,000,000 more than 2022. To put that in perspective:

It would only cost $58 billion to implement a free college tuition program

It would cost $20 billion to end homelessness

It would cost $40 billion (the entire gdp of Serbia btw) leftover to replace all lead pipes so ppl can have access to clean water

That’s just what we can do with the $118 billion they increased the budget by, imagine what you could do with other $768 billion

But nobody asks how we can afford to give the military another $118 billion. Instead they fight to justify giving the military even more.

Remember that when elections come around and you hear “we can’t afford universal healthcare” because yes they can.

Before the final vote, Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced an amendment to the bill that would’ve cut the Pentagon budget by 10%. Cuts would be applied evenly across all Pentagon accounts, except for those “relating to military personnel, the Defense Health Program, and assistance to Ukraine.” The amendment failed, 88–11.

This doesn’t reflect public opinion. Pretty much every public poll I’ve seen suggests that more Americans want to decrease military spending than increase it (this poll, for example). What explains this discrepancy?

Senate appropriators have put forward a $852.2 billion defense spending bill for fiscal 2025, boosting funds $21 billion beyond the Fiscal Responsibility Act limits and setting up a fight with the House, which held fast to the budget caps in its defense bills. The Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously passed the bill out of committee this morning. The bill now moves to the Senate floor, though it — along with the Senate version of the National Defense Authorization Act — won’t be taken up until after the August recess. The SAC was the last of the four defense committees to present its version of the Pentagon’s FY25 budget, which will need to be reconciled across the chambers at some point before the end of the fiscal year.

The time to dissent this is now.

A year has passed since the war began, and we are still alive—living bodies, but without hope, without passion. Our bodies are exhausted by constant fear and displacement. I am Noor Al-Anqar, 26 years old, married to Ashraf Ismail (33 years old) and a mother of three children: Hussein (7 years old), Rajaa (5 years old), and Youssef, our infant (1 year old).

At the start of the war, our home was bombed and completely destroyed. We fled from the north to the south in search of safety, only to realize that there is no safe place.

•This is our home, filled with our memories and moments of joy and happiness, now reduced to rubble. Its destruction shattered our hearts.

I’m writing to you from my tent, which neither shields us from the cold of winter nor the heat of summer. After suffering through the harsh summer heat, we now await the winter with dread, living in torn tents and wearing tattered clothes, amidst severe shortages of basic necessities like food, water, clothing, and most importantly, safety.

•My children are the heartbeat of my heart.

Hussein, who should have started his education by now, has lost his right to learn.

Rajaa, my precious little princess, has contracted hepatitis due to the lack of proper healthcare.

My children are the most valuable thing I have in this life, and I promise you, I will defy the impossible to ensure they are alright.
