honestly the older I get, the more I value kindness. everything is confusing and hard, the best thing we can to is be nice to eachother even if thatâs cheesy!
will never forget when i worked in a fast food joint. some customer wrote like â86 cherriesâ on their mobile order, as like a pretentious way of say no cherries, but the store was run by a bunch of high schoolers who are working their first job so they collectively went âwhy the fuck does this guy want 86 fucking cherriesâ and like piled them onto his milkshake
so when i made this i didnât expect ANY notes so i feel like an asshole now for not explaining. so incase you check the notes, 86 in restaurant terms means âunavailable or out of stockâ but has kinda morphed into âomitâ or âleave outâ. but none of us had worked in a restaurant before, also why would you not just say âno cherriesâ itâs the same amount of characters to type
Man ordering food: I work in the restaurant business ;)
Children working at restaurant: this guy must really like cherries. Got something in your eye there sir

I think one thing I really didnât get when I was like 20 is that âsmall talkâ is often a way for people to hint at the bigger deeper things that are going on with them without overloading someone. like it can be an invitation and a chance to test the waters before launching into things that it may or may not be the appropriate time/place/person to talk about those things with.
like when someone asks âhow are you,â you donât have to respond with âgood,â but it also isnât necessarily a good context to go straight to âI keep flipping my shit at people I love because I canât regulate my emotions and Iâm afraid of them dying or abandoning me,â plus if someone isnât used to broaching that kind of topic at the beginning of an interaction it gives them a chance to develop the kind of comfortability to be able to talk about that stuff. some people will reach that point sooner than others, whether itâs over 10 minutes or multiple years.
also, Iâve realized that itâs a shame to dismiss talking about things besides our deepest troubles as being meaningless. human connection is meaningful even if it is just about the weather or how our family or our favorite sports team is doing, and knowing how someone feels about these supposedly surface topics tells us a lot about eachother that can be applied to topics you may consider more personal or impactful, and forming that foundation with someone is absolutely not something to be pushed aside as trivial.
Small talk is social calibration. You calibrate a system before you use it for intense or precise work.

this shouldnât be a hot take but your life has exactly the same value whether you work 7 days a week or 5 days a week or 2 days a week or 0 days a week.Â
your life is valuable because itâs your life, and you have a lot to offer the people around you. it doesnât matter how much youâre able to work.Â
the most important thing is that you are as happy and healthy as possible, whatever that means for you.

Gave me cookie, got you cookie, man, weâre even!
Can the person who has me trapped in their tamagotchi make me do some basic tasks today please.
Toucan: âthat there just ainât naturalâ
I see (and agree with) your âyouâre one bad month away from becoming homeless (so start redirecting your loyalty from billionaires to the working class)â and I raise you a âyouâre one accident, one insect sting, one sudden mysterious illness, one virus from becoming permanently disabled (so start redirecting your sympathy from the able-bodied class to the disabled)â.
Itâs nearly impossible for a person to reach old age and not be at least mildly disabled. Start caring about disability rights NOW.
Every time I see that post thatâs something like âweird, but technically not a sin,â I think about being seven or eight years old and bawling to the priest that I had scaled the walls of the pantry in my home like a spider monkey in order to eat all of the cookies that my parents had naĂŻvely hidden on the top shelf to keep me from getting into them and wailing that I was a hopeless criminal and hearing just dead silence on the other side of the little wall.
