they organized a march for women’s day denouncing the erasure of women. they were against congress passing a gender identity law (that would allow trans people to change their sex on their birth certificates in a straightforward way) before they addressed the demands women have been making for decades, especially with regards to abortion and the high rates of femicide in the state of mexico (one of the most dangerous for women in the country).

they also decided to set up tents outside congress to demand reproductive rights and were met with state violence (tear gas etc) and hostility from the general population. several women were threatened and/or physically assaulted (by congresspeople as well as civilians) while police watched and did nothing to stop it. trans collectives started protesting outside the building several days later, pressuring congress to pass the gender identity law. some of their members also harassed the feminists, including an underaged girl.

since then, they have continued to suffer sexual and physical harassment as well as derision from the press while they continue to demand their rights.

You’re supposed to believe that sheep shearing is violent and cruel. There are imbeciles out there that work in an unprofessional manner while shearing, but that’s not the case overall.

Sheep don’t suffer from having their fleece removed.

Left on, the fleece can become a home for fly eggs and the subsequent maggots which can eat the sheep. Chemical treatments are available to prevent that happening. It’s much better for the sheep, the land and the farmer to avoid chemical use.

Look at how many different apocalypses people can visualise. Our brains can freely feast on unlimited scenes of scarcity, competition and fear. Everywhere we turn we can consume endless content about killing our neighbors for scraps, about hurting children, about bleak planets and extinction, and lots and lots of guns. It is easy, accessible and cheap. Our minds gobble up as much of this content as the market generates and the market gleefully generates more. We feed and feed upon a future of suffering and loss. We feast on images of brown children being hurt, unnecessarily, and say smugly that “that’s just what humanity is like.” Our brains are programmed away from the natural human responses to crises (fix it, help each other, rebuild and hope) and TOWARDS the mindsets of fictional apocalypse (cause it, turn on each other [it’s just what humans do! We’ve all seen the same stories!], collapse, fight each other for crumbs, the world is doomed anyway.)

It’s pretty unnecessary. And frankly pretty cringe. Imagine being part of some of the most prosperous, empowered, educated, connected group of humans to ever exist, and having a brain that can only picture the future as apocalypse-movie.

And where is the food of abundance, equality, beauty, hope, diversity? Where is the actual food of the future? Oh. It’s in, like, three solarpunk anthologies, huh?

Anyway not to get all Amitav Ghosh on main but we have GOT to address this unnecessary and EMBARRASSING failure of imagination. Because we are the generation currently failing in our responsibilities as caretakers of the earth, because of this deranged inability to picture the world as being a real place, and the future being a place where people will live.

liberal feminists will continue to celebrate the framework of women’s rights that second wave feminists built: roe v wade, equal pay act, divorce laws, etc. And then quote them, appropriate the language of radicalism, and meanwhile erase the actual women and movement that they’re quoting.

Living in Saudi Arabia is what radicalized me into feminism in the first place. And I remember how callously my experiences were and are dismissed, by every flavor and stripe of Americans. Americans who feel that all Arab countries are backwards and regressive hate that I think I am their equal. Americans who claim to hate misogyny and prejudice hate that I think I deserve the same rights they enjoy. This has been true for a very long time, nearly the last two decades now.

Seeing that women are still being terrorized, that compulsory hijab, forced marriage, rape, assault, all things that I have seen up close and personal, are still happening around the world large-scale. And then seeing that even the people who claim to be global citizens (but not globalists!!) and claim to live lives that abhor prejudice and hatred are too busy arguing that ‘woman’ actually isn’t a class of people and is meaningless … it’s just too much really.

Men who hate women are everywhere. They’re sharing their opinions on their safe reddit spaces, in classrooms, in public forums, in legislative bodies, in courtrooms, in literature and philosophy. Not one of those leftists who claim to abhor sexism will challenge even one of these men. They’re too scared to go after someone who is an actual threat. Make no mistake: these men are an actual violent threat.

That’s why feminists are a target. The consequences of openly hating women are nonexistent. There’s almost no legal protection that women have, and even when there are such protections, they’re rarely enforced. There’s no powerful cabal of feminists who are armed and stalking the streets, ready to blow a hole through a would-be rapist’s head. The absolute worst thing a feminist can do is be mean to you. Exclude you, even. And this is treated as worse than state violence.

There are women who were never allowed to go to school. There are even more women who were only allowed to get a rudimentary education and forbidden from enjoying any independence. There are women who were raped with the intention of forcing them to carry a pregnancy to term and then raise the resulting child for two decades. There are so many teenage girls dying in labor that maternal mortality is the leading cause of death for girls 14-19 worldwide. There are women who never came to be because they were murdered as neonates for being born with a vulva. That isn’t “identifying” into womanhood. How can an infant identify as anything?
