If youāre buying Apple shit in the 2020s you totally deserve the ripoff that you get
The fucking option that includes an Ethernet port just puts it on the external power supply, like itās a fucking MacBook.
People keep saying that this is how computer adaptability works and comparing it to the decrease in the lack of CD-ROM drives and Floppy Disk readers.
But this is completely different! And do you want to know why? Because, previous changes were consumer led. They came AFTER the technology had run its course, had viable alternatives, and didnāt force a majority of customers to adapt for profit. Also, Apple is lying. This isnāt innovation, itās a purposeful manipulation of the market that makes physical ownership of content more difficult.
The Floppy Disk wasnāt just abandoned. It was replaced by CD-ROM in the 90s as a more portable & less expensive alternative. And even then, CDs had existed for more than a decade before computer manufacturers made the permanent switch in 2003. And despite the switch, the production of the floppy disks themselves continued until 2011. By the time floppy disks truly faded from production, most ppl didnāt even own one. And when CD-ROM became āobsolete,ā they werenāt ripped from the market and even today itās fairly easy to find readers that are cheap and/or included with desktops or laptops.
But hereās the thing? CDās arenāt obsolete. Neither are DVDs, USB, and Ethernet and SDs. Not really. What is there to replace them? You could say cloud, streaming, etc. But those arenāt actually replacements, they are just different forms of consuming materials. And a majority of consumers will be inconvenienced without those things. Like how would you even connect a wired mechanical keyboard? Thatās not adaptation, itās inconveniencing consumers until they get used to it.
But itās more than inconvenience. What all of these exclusions do is get rid of physical data. It slowly ostracizes consumers from the very concept of physical data and that is incredibly dangerous. All softwares, ad-ons, recordings, and medias being relegated to downloadable accessibility makes these things harder to pirate or share. It also encourages monopolies as it makes smaller, independent production and sharing much more difficult. It also makes the distribution of softwares tied to research & employment more easily controlled by corporations rather than people. And most of all, it takes away consumer control of the things that they use.
Like even PlayStation did this with the PS5? Do you really think not having a physical drive is an innovation? With physical games you can reuse, share, and save. I can play Spider-Man, give to my cousin, and then let any friend borrow it. And unless I bought the physical game online, neither google or Amazon can add that to their algorithmic perception of me. But without thatā¦you have content strictly defined on individual basis and algorithms.
Itās just that all of the growing exclusions arenāt adapting. They are willful manipulations for the sake of changing how large scale consumers ingage with technology and the internet.
The headphone jack was not obsolete. It was purposefully left out to sway the market towards $100 Bluetooth. Physical gaming disk drives arenāt growing obsolete. They are being purposefully phased out so that the consumer begins to rely on individual downloads and algorithm rather than sharing and saving. And USB/Ethernet/SD/HDMI are not obsolete either. They are just being ignored so as to get consumers to change their perception of tech and accessibility. As if having a computer thatās only compatible with apple tech thatās less than 5 years old is reasonable. As if any use of physical content is a paid luxury rather than the standard
I am doing research right now thatās requiring me to dig deep into the briefs for a case from last year called Internet Archive that found basically that libraries are not allowed to make digital copies of a book to loan out. The arguments in the briefs are very explicitly, āwe temporarily license ebooks but we donāt sell them, so libraries never get any ownership rights. Thatās our prerogative. You will never own anything anymore, deal with it ā *and they win* the drive away from letting us have anything physical is very much to deprive us of rights we used to have. With physical books, libraries can rent them forever for free. With ebooks , libraries have to pay over, and over, and over. Because digital! Thatās the only difference. You know how they talk about getting books off library shelves? That is really easy to do with when you can just erase it from the libraryās license. Buh-bye, book.
Enjolras pressed his hand with a smile. This smile was not ended when the report resounded.

A Company Reminder for Everyone to Talk Nicely About the Giant Plagiarism Machine
by Amanda Bachman
"Hey team. Itās your CEO. I know your time is valuable, so Iāll cut right to the chase: Itās come to my attention that some of you have been bad-mouthing the Giant Plagiarism Machineā¢.
Iād like to remind you that our company policy is proāPlagiarism Machineā¢. Weāre a tech-forward, future-oriented company that doesnāt shy away from the promise of new innovationāeven if that innovation is a Giant Plagiarism Machine⢠that copy-pastes existing innovation into fake sentient sentences.
Lately, it feels like some of you arenāt the techno-optimists I took you to be. Youāve been heard uttering slurs like āIām worried about my job stabilityā and āI just donāt think itās positive for humankind,ā neither of which sounds remotely optimistic or techno. Iāve even heard shocking reports of teams failing to incorporate plagiarism into their processes, becauseāI canāt believe I have to repeat thisāāitās not helpful.ā
Team, hear me when I say that this is harassment, and it must end. Put yourself in your coworkerās shoesāsay, a coworker with really nice, designer footwear, who has invested their personal fortune into the Giant Plagiarism Machineā¢, along with other intellectual-property-theft futures. Imagine how that coworker (could be anyone!) might feel working alongside such Negative Nancies.
Folks, thatās just not who we are. This is and has always been a company of risk-takers who are unafraid to move fast and break things. Or at least, thatās what I thought, until a bunch of you started bringing up the many merits of proceeding cautiously and keeping things unbroken.
It just really comes as a shock that such accomplished intellectuals, whoāve spent their entire careers pushing the upper bounds of human achievement, could be judgy about a machine that runs the entirety of human imagination through a shredder and glues together what comes out.
I guess I understand. I, too, was once a little skeptical of the Giant Plagiarism Machineā¢. But that was before I attended The Conference for Big Boy Business Ownersā¢. Here, I learned that my fellow titans of industry have been re-orging to āleverage plagiarismā and āminimize thought-waste.ā
It was at that very same conference that I learned critical thinking takes up 20 percent, sometimes 30 percent, of company time. Itās clear to me that some of you are not focused on the profit potential of outsourcing all of our thinking to a machine capable of remixing thoughts that have come before.
And sure, most of you are hired for your intellectual capabilities. But you donāt need to worry about losing your jobs to the Giant Plagiarism Machineā¢. As I always say, people are more powerful than plagiarism. (At least until the next economic downturn, during which I will quietly decide that, hey, maybe plagiarism was the dark horse all along.)
The way I see it, weāre family. It really does disappoint me that so many brilliant colleaguesāwhose genuine breakthroughs Iāve profited from for yearsāwould be so quick to condemn this newer, stupider way that I and others like me can make money off your lifeās work, through stealing.
So as we move forward, I want to hear a real turnaround in attitudes, troops!
Because, at the end of the day, you donāt really have a choice."
