Lions, Tigers, and Dinosaurs! Oh, my!
Recently, a group of archeologists from Germany and Mexico discovered what they believe is the largest dinosaur cemetery in the world. The "graveyard" is located in the Mexican state of Coahuila. Researchers have uncovered nearly 14 fossils that they believe to be dinosaurs. The area in which these fossils have been resting is only 164 feet by 656 feet. Researchers also found bones of over 15 other specimens only a few miles away.
The group of researchers have described the land to be an inhospitable wasteland. However, they explained that 70 million years ago, the desert landscape was actually very fertile land. The researchers have also added that they found a footprint of a Theropod near the dig site! How neat!
In a unit on dinosaurs, this would be so neat to show the students. This would expose them to real-life occupations that some may wish to pursue in the future. Another way to incorporate this into the classroom would be to have students go on a "dig" within the classroom. The teacher could put dirt in a small plastic bin and hide objects. The students would be asked to treat the area as appropriate by sectioning off pieces where they plan to explore, as well as observe and document their findings.
