This weekend was our second meeting for Teaching Science. We covered a lot of information in our brief time together! We started off Saturday with an activity that focused on non-standard units of measure. Each student was given four sticky notes, where they made predictions for how many baby steps and giant steps it would take to get to the end of the hallway. We selected a partner and began the experiment. The entire activity was based on the "Mother, May I?" game.
I predicted that it would take me 85 baby steps to get to the end of the hallway -- actually it took me 114! My prediction for giant steps was 45 -- it took me 40. My predictions were incorrect for both of the experiments. However, we learned about the scientific processes and how this activity applied.
This activity was great for the younger grades. It helped them to focus on measurement. I would definitely consider using this if I have the opportunity to teach little bitties!
Before lunch, we worked in science centers. Each center had beautiful seashells and integrated content areas. At one center, we were asked to write a letter to a grandparent or friend. Each center touch a part of the scientific processes while working the brain! This was nice to see in action!
Now for a brief break until our last class meeting in two weeks!
