there's been an issue in the twst fandom that ive noticed becoming increasingly more prevalent as the fandom has gotten bigger in the past several months - people referring to bigotry and issues within the twst fandom (racism, misogyny, pedophilia, transphobia, etc) as though it's just trivial discourse, fully minimizing these issues instead of actually properly calling them out and discussing them
ESPECIALLY when it comes to the racism within twst, which is absolutely present within both the fanbase and the game itself. when poc in the fandom call out these issues and voice concerns with the representation, particularly with stereotypes, how characters who are poc get treated and portrayed, whitewashing, orientalism, and many other issues present, other fans are overwhelmingly quick to dismiss these concerns, finding ways to excuse both it and their own participation in it. people are so defensive and unwilling to listen, allowing themselves to be ignorant and CONTINUE perpetuating racism because it makes them uncomfortable to actually listen to the people that are being actively harmed. not just the characters and story itself either, but the fact that there's also in general an absolutely rancid amount of racist harassment that's targeted towards fans who are poc, and it is NOT called out nearly enough as it needs to be.
in the past several months, there's also been much of a rise in blatantly pedophilic behavior in the fandom too (sexualization of the young twst characters has always been an issue, much like most of the big issues in the twst fandom and fandom spaces in general, but this has DEFINITELY also increased since the anime release + broadening of the fandom too). there's been a lot of discussion about this on tiktok especially, with recent issues like people taking the fragrantcia trend (which if you don't know, many of the moodboards following this trend are very explicit) and putting child twst characters into it. there's also been a rise in fully grown adults in the twst fandom being called out for self shipping with underage twst characters, and attempting to justify it by claiming things like that "the characters look older", which is contextually clear predatory rhetoric.
the problems with how the twst fandom addresses prejudice and other alarming behaviors lies not only within how these issues are directly minimized, but also how they're minimized with people directing their focus to nonissues instead. a particular example of this is the discourse around headcanons, and how people will continuously reheat discussion about this for the purpose of hating on fan interpretations, most of which are completely harmless and are created by marginalized fans who want to feel properly represented by the characters they enjoy. in hateful "criticisms" surrounding many of these headcanons, people not only wrongfully attack others over things just aren't problematic instead of focusing on things that ARE, but also just generally use these discussions and "criticisms" to out their blatantly bigoted views.
i feel another issue is also how some "attempts" at actually discussing these topics are just sensationalizing them, approaching them in an unserious manner instead of actually starting meaningful discussions that call out direct occurrences of these issues. it brushes over how dangerous these things are, and how much they affect other fans. as previously mentioned, these issues have always existed in fandom spaces, and aren't new to the twst fandom. but there's definitely been an increase in the minimization of these issues as they've become more prevalent with the fandom increasing in size, and it's OUR responsibility to properly acknowledge these problems instead of just treating it as if it's "drama".
iâm not a nikki freeman apologist because nikki freeman did nothing wrong what would she have to apologize for
oh and another thing that devastates me about Obsession is how much nikki is judged and blamed by those around her. sarah and ian repeatedly telling bear that he shouldnât have to deal with her, that sheâs not his responsibility, that theyâre worried sheâs taking advantage of him. as if they arenât also her friends, as if they shouldnât know her well enough to notice something is off. thereâs no concern for why nikki is behaving the way she is, thereâs just distain towards it. she starts acting out of character and so it must all be intentional. but bear doesnât get questioned. bear isnât gossiped about. nikki loses all her agency and autonomy, and all she gets for it is judgment
I genuinely appreciate how obsession doesn't try to frame bear as morally grey but just fully leans into how deplorable he is. a lesser movie would have tried to give him redeeming moments along the way but no, at every single crossroads bear makes the wrong choice. when the customer service rep asks him if he wants to cancel his wish, he says no, and asks to alter it. when nikki, the real one, begs him to kill her, he asks her "if it would be so bad to love him", and right at the end, backs out of killing himself and tries to throw the pills up. he is the villain, not another victim, not a confused, cowardly boy, the villain.
on my second viewing of obsession, i had the realization that nikkiâs story at the party wasnât the movie using incest as an easy shorthand for making the audience uncomfortable or creating a general âthings are offâ vibe but was another way the real nikki was crying outâa metaphor for the fact that nikki, like gretel, is being made to fuck her âlittle brotherâ (bear) under duress, at the behest of an external magic (the witchâs spell in her story; obviously, bearâs wish)

it is terrifying that bear only sought to "alter" his wish rather than cancelling it but what is even more terrifying is that he wouldn't even have called the number had nikki not inconvenienced him. if she did not act in such extreme ways bear wouldn't even have a problem. which is sooooo sooooo terrifying because he was completely fine living and being "loved" by nikki who he knew wasn't the real her. he claimed to love her, but even when she started acting like a totally different person it was water off a duck's back for him. he DIDN'T CARE whether it was the real nikki or an entirely different person.
even when she begs him to kill her, he does not feel even a shred of pity for her; he only worries "is being with me that bad".
the only reason he tries to change anything is because her behavior started to scare him FREAK him out. had she acted in a meeker way, bear would've lived with her HIS WHOLE LIFE knowing she ISN'T the real nikki NOT GIVING A FUCK about what she would've wanted. PERIOD.
the more i sit with it the more i realise that the title of the movie did not refer to nikki's obsession with bear but rather his obsession with her. because i know fs that what he felt for her definitely wasn't love.
thereâs something so gutwrenching about the fact that the female characters in obsession have real dreams and wishes but never get the chance to see them realized, while both male characters waste their wishes on short-term selfish satisfaction. they were complex, free-spirited young women who just wanted to create art, and they were destroyed by a man determined to confine them to his superficial perception of them. nikki wanted to be a writer, sarah wanted to be a tattoo artist and now neither of them will get to be anything at all
