I badly want to start saying âthis is my Swarovski Shrekâ to refer to any outrageously expensive yet ridiculous object I start coveting. If anyone says âwhat the fuckâ and asks what I mean, well. Itâs their lucky day to learn about Swarovski Shrek

I just saw a video title on YouTube that said something like âWhy is glass transparent?â And thatâs an interesting question and Iâm sure itâs great that the video exists but my first thought was like âBecause glass is terrible, obviously.â Because itâs unwieldy and letâs out warmth and needs to be heated to hundreds of degrees to be shaped and turns into hundreds of tiny daggers if you drop it. Why the hell would we bother with that if it didnât have some magical quality like being totally transparent despite being solid? Glass is transparent because if it werenât, weâd use something else.
If youâre still curious we did not start working glass for its transparency. It was most likely started as a sanitary concern. Glass is easy to clean with soap and water, once itâs cleaned out you can use it again for anything and no germs or flavor from the previous meal or drink will remain.
Other materials at the time, namely clay, would absorb flavors and germs meaning that if you ate beef off a clay plate your next meal with that plate could have beef flavor and microbes common on cow meat on it. That would leak out seemingly at random no less. Heck imagine a sick person coughing into their soup bowl and then months later their germs hiding in the clay would pop out to infect whole new people.
Also the earliest human use of glass we know of is for its sharpness. Pre-historic people would use volcanic glass as sharp knives for food preparation. Also beads. Pretty much any new substance humans get their hands on for most of our history we immediately try to make into beads.
The fact that it could become see through was a side benefit.

I highly recommend looking at the #5 post by Sounsyy!
(Also a thank you to Cam'nahl for finding this post for me <33)
So far as I can tell, the days of the week listed above (Firesday, Earthsday, etc) never actually appear in the game. (I canât speak to bonus content like the short stories off the top of my head, but should I ever run across any examples, Iâll take note of it.) This seems to be entirely Word of God, specifically a 2014 interview with localization director Michael Christopher Koji Fox, who states that the days of the week are the same as in Final Fantasy XI. (Cited here on the archived roleplayersâ forum.)
Gamerescape also has this handy reference page on Eorzean time.
Multiple sources heavily cite The Five Ages - An Eorzean Chronology, which appeared in 1.0 by way of âDusty Tomesâ found in various guilds. These texts didnât return in the remake (except, amusingly, as a housing item), so weâre reliant on the fandomâs archivists to preserve them. When you see someone refer to âDusty Tomes,â as in the roleplayersâ forum posts linked above, thatâs what theyâre talking about.
As a side note: while the units of distance and weight measurement above fully replace our real-world units, that is not the case for the units of time. âHourâ and âbellâ seemed to be used about equally in MSQ dialogue (thank you @eriyu once again for your service). Though âmoonâ is more common, âmonthâ appears more than a few times. âDayâ is more common than âsun.â âSennightâ is barely there (though it pops up a few more times in side content), and as itâs technically a misnomer that tends to needle a lot of detail-minded fans, I wouldnât feel obligation to use it over âweek,â which appears far more often in canon anyway. âFortnightâ is similarly a misnomer, but a bit more commonly used since there isnât a alternative word for âtwo weeks.â There are no alternate words for minutes or seconds; theyâre called the same as we do.
