i think the craziest thing about "someone got past his guard. i'm his guard and i didn't see it coming" is that vimes is not ACTUALLY vetinari's guard. its stated multiple times in the books that vetinari has his own personal palace guards yet vimes CHOOSES to think of himself as vetinari's guard. as HIS. like. it's never really been his responsibility to protect vetinari and still he has SINCE GUARDS GUARDS taken on that job bc he's the only one who he TRUSTS to do it. he would literally take a bullet for vetinari and say he did it bc its his job but IT'S NOT!!!! ITS LITERALLY NOT. he's a CITY WATCH COMMANDER. NOTHING to actually do with protecting the patriarch. AND if someone else anyone else would be the patriarch he wouldn't be doing it. vetinari is HIS, his to kill and his to protect. insane

antarctic exploration is so funny because you read about the endurance expedition and it’s a zany adventure with a lovable stowaway and trials and tribulations that show the indomitable nature of the human spirit without a single man lost and it ends in a thematically resonant and meaningful way with a fitting and beautiful conclusion and then you get to the belgica and the crew are running away constantly, they frame the cook for his own beatdown and get him fired, the beloved moral-boosting chipper ships boy literally falls off of the boat and drowns before they even GET to antarctica, the commandant and the captain are deliberately freezing the ship in ice to protect their beautiful belgian honor, they’re constantly falling into crevasses, and the ships pet penguin dies in what i cannot stress enough is the most narratively ominous and portentous circumstance on the morning of their imprisonment in the ice. the doctor was literally imprisoned for fraud.

the first mate, the captain, and the commandant all inhabited the same ship all lived in officers quarters and all INSISTED on fighting with each other through angry letters passed between rooms in the worlds worst game of scurvy-ridden telephone. a guy went crazy and started running away and killing penguins and sleeping in the hold with the rats and instead of doing anything about it everybody just sort of politely ignored him. the first mate everybody’s favorite sadomasochistic chad roald amundsen literally resigned from his position while they were still stuck in the ice but just sort of continued to do his job for no pay as a fuck you to the commandant, who, by the way, refused for MONTHS to consume the only known antiscorbutic food on board (penguin meat) while in the death throes of scurvy because he didn’t want his benefactors back in good old belgium to be offended that he didn’t eat his slop like a patriot would. the doctor (again, arrested for fraud) was baking people naked in front of a stove three times a day to prevent scurvy. they were making bombs inside the ship next to a fire regularly and the bombs didn’t even WORK.
