Today, the Self-Determination Act comes into force in Germany. Trans and intersex people can now submit an application to the registry office to change their name and gender marker and then have the change carried out after a three-month waiting period for around €35 (that is, if they get an appointment at the registry office...). This means that trans people no longer have to go through an expensive and humiliating court proceeding and intersex people no longer have to provide medical proof of their intersexuality. The law was passed after a long back and forth and it is far from ideal, but it is still progress.
