This comparison really cuts to the heart of what these small town, conservative parents keep panicking over
What they fear is knowledge because what is learned can never truly be unlearned. They wish to dictate all information their property children interact with so that only shared values can take root. To present any other options to these kids is to "turn them into a transexual/gay/satanist/hippie/communist/etc" against their parents' will which is the only will that matters to these parents.
The advent of the Internet Age has severely reduced the possibility of maintaining this blockade. Before we were all connected like we are today, a small town parent had little resistance since most neighbors were of the same mindset. Those who weren't either kept their heads down, left, or were socially exiled.
Now, many of us have devices in our homes and even our pockets with access to a plethora of knowledge that would make the Library of Alexandria look like a Scholastic Book Fair. Ignorance is no longer sustainable, and these parents are reacting with anger and hate because it's significantly easier than just actually parenting their kids.
