soulsborne NPC questlines are like. In order to summon Dillard you gotta talk to him at the Shrine BEFORE you unlock the Wretched Cathedral or he'll become hostile after moving to the Hallowed Altar. If you're also doing Herbert's questline, make sure you fetch the Musty Book AFTER talking to Dillard at the Altar, or they'll both disappear and you'll be locked out of the Sacred Curse Ending (and you won't be able to buy lichen poultice from Herbert for the Festering Husk fight).
