âThe LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that heâs the most boring average person in the world. Itâs impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if sheâs female sheâs already SOMEthing, because sheâs not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but itâs weirdly prevalent in childrenâs entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, whoâs a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new charactersâ is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?â
â Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg commenting on how weird gendered defaults in entertainment are, and why we should think twice about them. Excerpted from this longer original post. (via 360degreesasthecrowflies)

Meanwhile, a little while back my friend Alaa was talking about "the best Italian restaurant in Gaza!", how everyone knew it; it was run by these two brothers who had migrated from Italy, what an experience it was, how on social media everyone was begging them for their recipes, that they had the best pasta sauces ever, that she was always recommending it and wanted everyone to be able to try it...
...and then finished with "but then of course the occupation bombed the restaurant with the entire family inside and they were all killed".
She's now working on a site dedicated to showing all the important little local places in Gaza that no longer existâpartly so that her own children can know them, and partly so they cannot be completely erased by the occupiers.
She's also working on this project, again to preserve the culture and history that the occupation is trying to wipe out, taking up the lead on this after her teacher Dr. Refaat Alareer (now most-known to English-speakers for his "If I must die" poem), who had started the project, was killed by the occupiers.

going on estrogen will make you like men, going on testosterone will also actually make you like men, breathing and existing in the world will make you like men too actually . what ? youâre a lesbian ? donât be ridiculous . have you considered that you might just not be far enough in your transition to realize that youâre sexually available to men, actually ? what about men ? have you considered transitioning into being a sex object for men, actually ? after all, itâs only natural .
My baby sister Maryam still isn't feeling well. If anything happens to her, remember I begged you for your help.

I keep seeing people say things like "if a bisexual woman chooses to live as a lesbian and never act on her attraction to men what makes her any different from any other lesbian, why cant she call herself a lesbian?" And I could point out the obvious that the internal experience of lacking attraction to men is a factor that affects a lot of lesbians' lives in a major way, in addition to the fact we date women. But also how is "living as a lesbian" not considered garden variety "pick a side" biphobia? Bi women can prefer women, only date women, marry women, etc. You do not have to be a lesbian to do that.
Fun Fact: the primary victims of the Vietnam War were not the American soldiers, but the 3 million Vietnamese civilians
Similarly, if Trump sends troops to Iran (which is seeming likely) you need to understand that these people chose to go and kill civilians, the primary victims of American Imperialism are the ones who we wage war on
American Service Member are murderers and rapists, and they don't even try to hide it
my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government

I wonder if itâs not a coincidence that the women most vulnerable to violence and exploitation at the hands of everyone are consistently portrayed as being the most able to fend for themselves and that the women who are the least vulnerable are portrayed as the most needing of protection :/
the most common way i see people on the left frame women not shaving is that women who donât shave think theyâre better than everyone else and need to be put in their place. this framing is so powerful iâm actually a little afraid to talk about it because i KNOW some people will read this and think i think iâm better than everyone else. but like we gotta know this isnât actually progressive.
Itâs really telling that being able to push through constant negative societal and personal feedback in order to allow your body to just Exist is seen as âthinking youâre better than everyone elseâ. Shame is so fundamental to womanhood that being able to shake off even just some of it is perceived as arrogance. (When it is not possible to write it off as slovenliness anyway; if they can dismiss you as a less-than-woman or not-woman then they donât bother labeling you arrogant! If theyâre ~progressive~ they have to find another reason to express disgust, e.g. by linking it to character.)
It really gets me upset when the trans man lesbian crowd spreads these soft positivity posts like âtrans men have always had a place in the lesbian community uwuâ with not a degree of awareness. Itâs been shown statistically, that a majority of cis lesbians will proudly state they would prefer to date trans men over trans women. Itâs been shown how trans men are accepted by cis lesbians and welcomed in lesbian spaces over trans women. And it isnât because of beautiful beautiful solidarity, its because they see them as women and they see trans women as men. Trans men have been equated with masc lesbians for decades and continue to this day, especially by terfs who use butch lesbian and trans man as interchangeable words. The absolute tone deafness Iâve seen in these discussions boggles the mind, like saying trans men grew up identifying as lesbians, being treated as women, being âsocializedâ as women, so they have a ârightâ to lesbian spaces. As if it doesnât subtlety imply that transfems have less of a right to be there then they do, as if it isnât regurgitated terf âmale/female socializationâ rhetoric. And when I point out these problematic elements I often get the trans men who argue for this stuff lecturing me about denying their agency and how they choose to be with lesbians. If yall want to date lesbians thatâs fine, I literally cant stop you nor care to. Itâs worth noting though, that there have been plenty of instances of trans men voluntarily dating straight men, yet we dont have this community push to validate straight men chasers and their trans boyfriends. For good reason, too. I am not saying trans men need to be âkicked outâ of lesbian spaces, I understand the solidarity between our communities. That solidarity will always exist. (And again I want to point out for the most part they are NOT being kicked out or excluded. Trans fems are) And I understand that âmanâ doesnt always mean man in a binary sense, some people are nonbinary men and women and things arenât always as clear cut. As a transmasc, nonbinary lesbian I understand that. This does not apply to you. I just want people to please take note of the transphobic, specifically transmisogynistic overtones that accompany a widespread push to have trans men as a group be considered as exceptions to lesbian attraction.Â
The absolute tone deafness Iâve seen in these discussions boggles the mind, like saying trans men grew up identifying as lesbians, being treated as women, being âsocializedâ as women, so they have a ârightâ to lesbian spaces. âyou like pancakes, so you must hate waffles?â
âSocializationâ is a term/theory directly weaponized against transfeminine people, especially by transmisogynistic liberals/progressives and TERFs. They frequently point to âmale socializationâ of trans women to justify their exclusion and abuse. They point to trans mascâs âfemale socializationâ to cast us as safer, more trustworthy, more authentic voices in feminism/womenâs issues. They are directly related. Itâs biological essentialism dressed up in progressive language.
I donât know what TERFs intend by anything they say, so Iâm not speaking to that at all here. And admittedly, my perspective is rather limited to my lived experience, so if thereâs stuff Iâm missing, Iâm happy to listen.
What follows is my experience, my thoughts, and honestly my frustration. Nothing here is a personal jab at any of the previous posters or anyone specifically.
NOTICE: Mentions of CSA, religious trauma, and spousal abuse. Proceed at your own risk.
thanks for the trauma dump and hypothesizing about how 1 trans woman identified and why that justifies you seeing all trans women as less fundamentally lesbian than you are because of "how they were raised" aka biology. I wont be fully reading it though and I will be blocking you
a misogynistic society is so threatened by the concept of trans women - women that "had the opportunity" to be privileged men and chose not to - that they start making up privileges women have in order to explain why trans women exist. going into womens restrooms isnt a privilege, playing womens sports isnt a privilege, lesbianism isnt a privilege, yet they present them as such to try and explain why trans women are women for nefarious reasons. a misogynistic society will never understand that trans women have no ulterior motive for being women
Bigots denying a woman her womanhood aren't actually granting her the status of "man" esp with all its attendant privileges.
Degendering is a form of dehumanization. The goal of misgendering/degendering a woman is generally to treat her as a disposable object, unworthy of even the conditional and dubious "protection" that women are supposedly due under patriarchy.
If they actually saw her as a man she wouldn't be targeted in these ways, and "man/manly/male" would never be spat at her like an insult.

misogynoir and antiblack narratives are baked into damn near every reality tv show. black women are constantly being labeled "abrasive" "combative" "controlling" or "difficult" for behavior that will get brushed off or even rewarded when nonblack contestants do the exact same thing. if they're confident they're seen as aggressive, if they have boundaries they're seen as having an attitude, if they have a sense of leadership they're too controlling.
nonblack contestants can cry, lash out, manipulate, lie, or be openly messy af and still be given the benefit of the doubt, chances at redemption arcs, and given sympathy edits. black women don't get that luxury. one mistake is a character flaw. one reaction is proof of a stereotype. there's no room for grace and no room to be human, just constant surveillance and punishment disguised as "opinions"
reality tv loves black faces but still relies on antiblack tropes to move the story along. it's not about personality at all it's about who's allowed to be complex on screen and who's only allowed to exist if they're quiet and endlessly palatable. if you don't see it it's not because it's subtle it's because it's normalized.
the reason men are getting more conservative is very simply that as a class, as a socioeconomic group, their power is being threatened by womens civil rights. its the same reason for the broad surge in right wing politics. its called a backlash and its also why most civil war monuments are from the era of the black civil rights movement and not actually from the civil war.
