hello! i havenāt written a study tip post in so long oml, but since school has started for some and exams are coming for others, i figured this could come in rly helpful!
youāve written ur notes, now what? leave them be? read them? rewrite them? but theyāre either 1) too ineffective or 2) take too long. so here are some ways to make the most out of your notes!
- ĶĢ annotate them ĶĢ-
ur brain often shuts down if u just reread notes
this is a more active way of rereading
and it takes around the same time
go in w a pencil and just
mark out key terms and write their definitions
write out explanations
if u have examples / practice qs / graphs in ur notes
abbreviations or memorization techniques
lol no lie i went to write cat-ions are paw-sitive bc gold (bc /metal/ ions aye)
my friends needed those notes and r still mocking me to this day
anything that pops in ur mind
if ur stuck, imagine ur lending this to a friend
what would u add to help them understand?
- ĶĢ irl examples ĶĢ-
also a form of annotation i guess?
but add in some irl examples of the topic
so eg iām doing floods
hurricane katrina!
can link it to tropical storms
+ failure of levees / floodwalls?
+ impacts of floods
use well-known examples / something u know well
this will help u better understand the topic + apply concepts
- ĶĢ outline + summarise ĶĢ-
also another form of annotation?
i like to outline by summarizing / asking key concept qs
eg im doing non-cyclic energy flow in ecosystem
āexplain how energy is lost from an ecosystemā
and answer it!
summarise the topic in 1 paragraph!
just focus on the key concepts
sometimes weāre too caught up w expanding each concept we forget how they all add up
this isnāt necessarily part of ur notes, just a lil test for urself
- ĶĢ create a graphic ĶĢ-
my ultimate fav
mind maps / timelines / poster etc.
try to fit the graphic in one piece of paper
check out some mind maps here
this jogs ur memory sm and takes so little time / resources i love it
these are just some lil ways to be an active note taker and hopefully youāll retain info much faster and much better too!

accidentally deleted the og post oops but here it is again!
my fave greek history story to tell is that of agnodice. like she noticed that women were dying a lot during childbirth so she went to egypt to study medicine in alexandria and was really fucking good but b/c it was illegal for women to be doctors in athens she had to pretend to be a man. and then the other doctors noticed that she was 10x better than them and accused her of seducing and sleeping with the women patients. like they brought her to court for this. and she just looked at them and these charges and stripped in front of everyone likeĀ āyeah. im not fucking your wivesā and then they got so mad that a woman was better at their jobs then them that they tried to execute her but all her patients came to court and were likeĀ āare you fucking serious? she is the reason you have living children and a wife.ā so they were shamed into changing the law and that is how women were given the right to practice medicine in athens
Yeah, this isnāt some Greek myth story about a hero or demigod or something,Ā Agnodice was a real person who actually did this.

study foods!!
hellohello!! well if you donāt know, yours truly is an avid fan of food, soĀ iāve decided to make a masterpost of the foods you should be or should not be eating when youāre studying!! also included some study snacks which are all so easy and taste amazing. hope this was helpful!!
+ brain food
fish; often contain high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids and fatty acids are essential to proper neural function, and would help us focus more and learn how to study more efficiently!! which is what we all what
fruits; eat them!! and theyāre so convenient. fruits are capable of giving you that needed energy boost as they contain healthy sugars that your body would convert into energy!! BERRIES are especially good!! they are high in phytonutrients and antioxidants that improve blood flow to the brain and also improves neural function. raspberries, cranberries, blackberries, blueberries, etc,, and they all taste so good
vegetables; esp cabbage, bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts!! these are cruciferousĀ vegetables and have intense positive effects on your memory, which would make the retaining of information so much easier and quicker.. also try to eat them raw (i know) as the cooking would often boil the nutrients awayĀ
dark chocolate; i personally love dark chocolate so this is gr8 for me. the darker the chocolate, the more the blood flow to the brain, which would increase alertness, clarity and improves memory!! it tastes great and it could also help you get that A so why notĀ
legumes; (i learnt this from my mom so shoutout to her) BEANS. beans like kidney beans, chickpeas, black beans, all contain protein, which would power the brain. it also has high concentrations of folic acid, which would improve memory retentionĀ
whole grains; brown rice, millet, oatmeal, whole wheat bread, are good sources of fiber, potassium and magnesium. whole grains are able to give your metabolism a little boost and the fiber in it helps slow digestion so your blood sugar rises more steadily. which means 3pm energy crashes, food cravings and moodiness
coffee/caffeine; COFFEE!!! i love coffee and it is actually shown to improve mood, reaction time MEMORY and general cognitive function. however !!it has to be kept at a minimum!! which would bring me to my next point
+ things to be eaten in moderation (or tbh, THING)

Taking notes in a lecture (with a modified Cornell method)
So for my lecture notes, I use a slightly modified version of the Cornell method, and itās been really helpful to me, so I figured Iād make a guide about that and a little bit about lectures in general!
Before the lecture
Get your Cornell outline ready. I use a standard A4 notebook, and I do the left-hand line about 3.5cm from the side, and the bottom line about 4cm from the bottom of the page.
Find out whether or not you can record the lecture, or if itāll be recorded by the lecturer. Trust me, this is so helpful. Even if you only use it once or twice, itās still worth it. Not only is it useful if you donāt get everything down during the lecture, itās also useful later, when youāre writing an essay and you want that little bit of specific information which you didnāt write down. I use MiniRecorder (for Windows Phone) on my phone; this also means that I canāt get distracted fiddling with my phone.
During the lecture
Arrive early and try to get a seat at the front. This is something a lot of people will tell you, but it is really helpful. Sitting at the front gives you a good view of any lecture slides, and lets you hear the lecturer better. It also means that youāre less likely to get distracted!
Pay attention. This one seems obvious, but itās so easy to drift off for a moment or two and then realise that you have no idea what the lecturer is talking about. This is where your recording of the lecture comes in useful!
Put the date and the title of the lecture on your notes. I normally put the date at the top of the left-hand column, and the lecture title centre top in a little banner.
Notes. Keep them as relevant as possible. One way I use to decide what I should write is: what points does the lecturer repeat? What points are on the slide? What things do I not understand? What will be useful in an essay/exam?
Quotes. Donāt bother writing down a whole quote unless you want to and think you have time. I normally just get the first and last three or four words, with a āā¦ā in between, and the source of the quote. This means that if I need to find it later, I should be able to get hold of it online.
The Cornell method. Normally with this method, you donāt write in the left-hand column during the lecture. Because I study English Lit, I do things slightly differently. If a lecturer asks a question which feels more āgeneralā (for example, how would [x] author react to 2015?] I put it in the left-hand column under the heading of āLecture Qsā. Other than that, I focus on writing in just the centre column.
Space & decoration. I try to keep to just one page for organisational purposes (I keep a contents page at the front of my notebook to make it easy to find the notes I want), but you can use as many pages as you need/want, just make sure to draw up the Cornell outline before the lecture! Banners are also useful for me - I use them to highlight the title of the lecture and to separate bits of a diagram if I need to draw one.
After the lecture
Highlight your notes. Pick 2-5 colours and use each colour for one main topic in the lecture. For example, if I had a lecture on Alice in Wonderland mentioning 1) the context, 2) Victorian attitudes to imagination, and 3) the structure or text of the book itself, I would use three colours to highlight those points. I also tend to use a separate colour for quotes.
Summarise. Try to sum up the topics covered in the lecture in 2-4 lines in the bottom box. The points youāve picked to highlight are helpful here - is there a way you can condense the information from each point into a single line about that topic?
Questions. If you have any questions after the lecture, put them in your left-hand column to think about. I normally use banner-fied headings of āLecture Qsā and āPost-lecture Qsā to separate the two.
And thatās about it! Of course, this is just the method I use. It wonāt work for everyone, and it might not work for every subject. Iāve found it useful for English Literature, but thatās no guarantee itāll work for other topics. Use whatever method works for you! Good luck!
