This is Earth and the Moon, as seen from Mars. Look at that tiny blue ball. Just look at it. And realize how insignificant our own problems really are, how childish it is that we spill our own blood just to get dominion and resources on a small area of that tiny ball. This #EarthDay, let us all be reminded that our home is a 4.6 billion year old ball which saw numerous mass extinctions. When we say "save Earth", we're not really saving Earth; we're saving ourselves from our own actions that lead to Earth destroying us in the process. Because at the end of the day, Earth doesn't need us; we need Earth. #Earth #Science #MarchforScience #life #universe #cosmicperspective #NASA #conservation #climatechange
NASA has just announced that a form of chemical energy that life can feed on appears to exist in Saturn's moon Enceladus! Enceladus has a global ocean beneath its icy crust, and occasionally emits plumes of water, which was analyzed by both the Cassini spacecraft and the Hubble Space Telescope. On Earth, life can thrive without the help of sunlight, as shown by the diverse species living near hydrothermal vents deep onto the ocean floor, driven by the planet's internal energy. The same mechanism is thought to exist on Enceladus. It'd be very exciting to send some spacecraft to land on Enceladus and perhaps go fishing there. Other moons in the solar system with underground oceans are Jupiter's Europa and Ganymede. The moons of the gas giants seem as, or if not, more interesting than the parent planets themselves. The UNESCO Institute for Statistics has released an interactive graph on the nations' spending on Research and Development relative to their GDPs, and their number of researchers per 1 million inhabitants. Innovations and discoveries in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields are the drivers of world's economies, for the past, present and future. Countries that innovate progress, and those that don't tend to wither. For the Filipinos, it's up to us and the government to improve the state of the Philippines evident here. Ten countries account for 80% of the total spending (about $1.7 trillion), and these are the most developed and progressive ones. On this day, 15 years ago, the world was shocked and horrified as the most powerful nation was attacked by al-Qaeda by hijacking four American planes, and crashing two of them into the World Trade Center Twin Towers (destroying the entire two towers), one into the Pentagon (partially collapsing the building's western side), and another on a field in Pennsylvania - the real target being the White House. It resulted to the largest and deadliest terror attack ever in the US, killing 2996 people and injuring 6000 others, and caused $10 billion in infrastructure damage and $3 trillion in total costs. The US responded by launching the War on Terror, which would ultimately lead to the killing of Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda's leader, in May 2011. #911 #september11 #terrorism #alqaeda #binladen #US #waronterror #worldtradecenter
Pluto, 1930-2015 Our view of Pluto has indeed changed dramatically. We've come a long way, from a single dot moving against the background of stars as detected by its discoverer, Clyde Tombaugh, to an unrecognizable, blurry, orange-black sphere as captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, to a majestic dwarf planet (with a "heart") full of different surface features such as plains, mountains (made of ice!) and craters as captured by New Horizons just last year. Its moons, especially the largest, Charon, were imaged in unprecedented detail, too. Still, there's more to see in our backyard, the Solar System, and beyond. We have just barely begun exploring the universe. #Pluto #NewHorizons #Universe #SpaceExploration #NASA #life #humanity #throwback #astrophysics #Hubble

These two equations currently describe the entire universe. The left one summarizes Einstein's General Relativity (governing the massive), while the other, longer equation summarizes the Standard Model of Particle Physics (paradigm of Quantum Mechanics, governing the very small). These two theories are the pillars of modern physics. P.S. I don't know (at least not yet) what each of those terms in each equation mean, too, so don't bother asking me about that. 47 years ago today (20 July in the US), humans first landed on the Moon. As Neil Armstrong casted his first footprints on the lunar surface, he said, "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind". A total of twelve men, across six missions, (the first one, Apollo 11; the last one, Apollo 17) have stepped on the Moon. Here is a picture of Buzz Aldrin, the second man to step on the lunar surface, photographed by Armstrong (he is seen as a reflection on Aldrin's visor). And no, all the Moon landings were not a giant hoax. Get over it. This was done during the Cold War, when NASA was sufficiently funded to go head-to-head with the Russians and win the space race. Despite the turbulent era, this was one shining beacon and definitely the crowning glory of human space exploration, and of the human species in general. #NASA #space #Moonlanding #Apollo #NeilArmstrong #universe #physics #life #throwback #BuzzAldrin #science #ColdWar

Happy birthday Mr. Einstein! #EinsteinDay #AlbertEinstein Today is the birthday of inarguably the most famous scientist in the world, Albert Einstein. His greatest contribution in science is his General Theory of Relativity, which revolutionized the understanding of the universe and is one of the two pillars of modern physics. Having published over 300 scientific papers, his contributions to physics go beyond Relativity, including quantum mechanics (and other branches of physics as well) and the philosophy of science itself. His originality and intelligence made his name a household one, and is considered to be synonymous with genius. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 is also known for using sheer thought (called thought experiments) in visualizing and conceptualizing his ideas. His ultimate goal was to unify all the fundamental forces of nature into a single Theory of Everything, which he continued working on until his deathbed in 1955. #physics #universe #relativity #life #humanity #science #throwback #ootd #piday #baby #college #biology #chemistry #thebigbangtheory
