#OnThisDay in 2001 the September 11th attacks occurred in the United States. Beginning at 8:46 am an American Airlines Boeing 767 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Seventeen minutes later a second Boeing 767 hit the South Tower. At 9:37 am a Boeing 757 crashed into the west side of the Pentagon in Washington DC after circling for a while. Finally, at 10:03 am a fourth hijacked plane, United 93, crashed into a rural field in Pennsylvania. This passengers on that fight attempted to retake the plane. It is not known, but United 93’s intended target may have been other significant buildings such as the White House, the US Capitol Building or Camp David.
