The Shadow of Death Masterlist

Kamaria shifts her position against the wall of the closet, pulling up her knees so that she can prop Bruno’s phone against them. Her eyes flick quickly over to his face. He’s still focused on the colorful lights and cheering people playing across the screen, good. There are lines of tension in his face, but overall he seems okay at the moment.

They’ve been sitting here ever since it started to get dark outside. Normally Kamaria isn’t keen on spending much time in closets, but with the light filtering down on them through their clothes and with Bruno sitting here with her, their hands entwined between them, it’s not so bad. Besides, even if it was bothering her, it would still be worth it. For him.

A countdown starts up on the screen, and Kamaria manages to find the button to turn the volume up a little louder, though not so loud that his noise-cancelling headphones will cut it out.

Five, four, three, two, one…

The mirror-covered ball ends its slow descent, and there’s an explosion of confetti across the tiny screen. At the same time, the loud pops from outside go from occasional bursts to a giant cacophony of sound. Bruno’s hand tightens around hers.

When she turns to look at him, worried, he stretches his mouth into a thin smile and leans down, pressing his lips gently against hers. She can hear the shakiness of his breaths as they kiss.

“Happy New Year, Kamaria,” he whispers once they break apart.

“Happy New Year, Bruno.” Laying the phone in his lap, she drops her head onto his shoulder and wraps her arm around him, careful to avoid his chest. He’s trembling slightly beneath her touch, and when he returns the gesture he clings to her as if she’s the one thing keeping him anchored to this closet floor.

It’s still technically Christmas for a few more minutes.

Seeing the decorations start to go up in store windows and on streetlights is a shock. It seems like the world should be standing still, just as trapped in grief as she is a month and a half later, but Kamaria is quickly discovering that the world doesn’t care about her existence. It marches on and on, daring to change seasons and celebrate holidays while she only barely survives in the shadows.

Her mom loved Christmas. Even though they could never afford much in the way of decorations and presents and treats, she always found a way to make it special, always made sure to keep their little traditions alive. Always loved the cheesy little handmade gifts Kamaria would carefully wrap up for her, acting as if they were the most precious treasure she’d ever laid eyes on.

The fact that she’s not here, will never be here to celebrate Christmas again, makes Kamaria irrationally furious.

By the time the day rolls around when all the stores begin to close up, their parking lots abandoned and the streets nearly as empty of cars, she’s gone through every emotion imaginable multiple times each. Anger, sorrow, hatred, apathy, nostalgia, depression…her life has become a rollercoaster of these kinds of feelings, anyway. Having to watch the rest of the world celebrate her mom’s favorite holiday just magnifies it.

That night, she’s stalking along the empty sidewalks, forcing herself to take advantage of the quiet to get out and look for food in places she might not normally dare to go. As she hops from restaurant dumpster to restaurant dumpster, she passes a church that glows with soft light from within. The sound of singing voices drifting out into the night is what catches her attention, though, stopping her in her tracks.

The next thing she knows, she’s quietly pushing open the door and slipping inside. Everyone is too busy singing to pay any attention to the dirty twelve year old on the back row, and that’s exactly how she wants it.

As the song ends, the musicians begin to transition into another, softer song. Kamaria’s eyes are fixed on the nativity scene at the front of the stage, so she doesn’t immediately notice what’s happening among the crowd, but pretty soon it’s hard to ignore.

They’re lighting candles. Each person there, from wrinkled old men to children smaller than her, holds a candle, and they’re passing the flame down each row, slowly filling the room with light.

When one of the ladies helping light the candles reaches the very back, she glances over at Kamaria in surprise. It quickly turns to a warm smile, though, and she holds out her own candle for her to take.

Being noticed is something Kamaria tries her best to avoid these days. Even now, it makes her stomach tie into a knot. But after a moment, she reaches out and grasps the candle, bringing it in front of her to cup in both hands. With another smile, the woman walks away.

The congregation’s voices lift up in song again. Kamaria doesn’t join in, even though she knows the words, but alternates between staring at the flame in front of her and scanning all the others like it dancing throughout the room.

All is calm

All is bright

She doesn’t dare to think too hard and barely even breathes, afraid to disrupt the moment. Pretty soon the service will end, and she’ll have to dart out the door before anyone else can notice her, going back to her world of cold and hunger and grief.

But for right now, she feels something that has been evading her for the past month and a half, something she wasn’t sure she’d ever feel again…
