CNN has done this whole investigative scoop on how elderly retirees have been priced out of retiring to Florida and all I can say is good. That is better for the environment. That is better for maintaining a support system. Stay where your loved ones are. I hate the idea that the cost of living is so high that you cannot even afford to move to a shitty fucking red state but old people need to stop moving to Florida. I’m more concerned about the people living in Florida than the retiree/snowbird population, stay in fucking Ohio instead of moving into a condo shoddily built over endangered wetlands. There are constant natural disasters and ongoing environmental concerns, I don’t care if you wanted to retire to the beach. This is something I am so passionate about as a southeasterner even if I am not from an ‘ideal’ retirement area, moving across the country at age 65 is a terrible idea logistically speaking, moving towards family is one thing but moving to a ‘scenic vacation’ area and pricing out all the locals and then needing a caretaker while your loved ones are states away is so baddddd.
we are crowded enough!! do not come to florida!!!
Not to mention that the elderly are more vulnerable to heat stress and less capable of evacuating during natural disasters, Florida is a terrible place to move to in your golden years.
I’m also from North Carolina and back in 2020, I was living in a trailer in an area that was the middle of fucking nowhere but has become a more touristy recreational area in the last 50 years and a lot of wealthy people from the research triangle had (temporarily) relocated there due to the pandemic and work from home mandates. The shit they would post on the previously very quiet Facebook group boggled my mind. “The nearest hospital is an hour away????” “There are no coffee shops or jogging trails?” “There are no municipal resources whatsoever?” YES, EXACTLY. EVERYONE ELSE IN THE COUNTY MAKES LIKE $40k A YEAR. GO HOME.
People in the Facebook group would be like “Is this a good place to retire to?” and locals would have to gently inform them that elderly residents in the region often have to leave the area because there are no doctors, no nearby hospitals, no home health aides and an overall lack of resources. It was so sickening.
Keep in mind old people really like the heat. We should, as a society, setting up places for people to retire to. We should allow people to go someplace warm and safe and spend their Golden years. I don't understand why people think that they can just say "DON'T COME HERE" and not out any effort into making a place for those same people.
Anything less is pretty bleak behavior.
Nope. We’re experiencing an elder care crisis and the answer is not to export them to Florida as Florida is a terrible retirement destination for the reasons outlined above. An elderly person’s desire to live somewhere warm does not supersede the needs of the people already living there nor does it negate the fact that pretty much every gerontological study indicates that it is better for elderly people to remain in familiar locations where they have longstanding community connections. We need more nursing homes, we need more assisted living communities, we need them across the nation. We need less people retiring to Florida.
Sorry I didn't mean to imply that Florida was THE only place, but this does need another aspect to it other than "anywhere but here" The whole gulf coast is fairly similar from my experience and we can spread people out in a much larger area than just Florida.
Again I apologize I didn't mean to communicate a "NO CHANGES ALLOWED" agenda, I was trying to get at 'You gotta offer up alternatives " adjustment to your plan
Nope. Gulf coast is bad for this. Someone mentioned that everywhere has natural disasters but I cannot stress enough that the frequent hurricanes, power outages and heat waves are terrible for aging bodies. It seems like a tropical paradise to these people and then they arrive and they are lonely and there is a lack of resources to care for them and they are pricing locals out of the places they’ve lived their entire lives. No public transportation, failing hospital systems, locals are struggling in many of these places and until the underlying systemic issues are fixed, making more retirement communities for out of staters will make everything worse.
I do think warning people not to retire to the southeast and to consider staying where they are is beneficial even if, I, a 25 year old barely scraping by, cannot offer them better retirement planning advice. Maybe someone will see me explaining why it is bad and think “Hmm. Perhaps I do not want to move hundreds or thousands of miles away from everyone who loves me to a place where the weather is warmer but far more violent and destructive and the land cannot support the population already living there and the medical care is poor. Maybe I should stay here where I am settled and opt for downsizing to a smaller residence, it seems like that would be more economical and less environmentally destructive than uprooting my entire life and going to a place where I am certainly not wanted.”
I do think these people are victims, I think they are sold this idyllic beach retirement future by property developers and many of them end up miserable, dying alone or eating into their savings. Countering this romanticization can be helpful. The Florida retirement dream is a bad idea.
It's not the responsibility of a person who is pointing out a problem to offer up a solution. If I ask someone to stop kicking me and their response is, "well who else am I supposed to kick?" I don't care. Stop doing the bad thing. It's not my problem what you do after that.

Hot take? I only think polygamy is bad if it is Mormon. Not inherently immoral in the slightest, practiced worldwide throughout history by many different cultures and religions. Humans have more female ancestors than male ancestors, probably because of related phenomena. No desire to get married at all much less have multiple wives but I think it’s only objectionable if your spouses do not consent, are children and/or you are Mormon. I know the mainstream Mormon church has outlawed it, that moral judgement applies to splinter groups and historical figures.
The thing is that they still believe in it when it comes to the afterlife. If you get sealed in a marriage and then your spouse passes and you get remarried, you will still be married in the afterlife.
Hello, tumblr! I saw something on here the other day that worried me, so I decided to Do Science about it. But I can't do it alone: I need your help to build the dataset!
Here's what I need you to do:
If you see a post with a "mature content" label, and it's 2026, DM me a link to the post.
Yes, that's really it.
I am hoping to collect several thousand such posts, so that I have a decent sized dataset. I do not care what the post is about; if it's labeled as "mature content", I want to add it to my dataset.
If I get 10,000 posts in my dataset before August 31st 2026, I will post my preliminary findings then. I won't feel comfortable calling my findings "settled" before 2027, unless I get over 50,000 posts.

Oh mein gott its the original fucking post

I'm confused. What is this?
One time I was watching a gay pornographic film from the 1970s and the bedroom set had a life sized cardboard cutout of James Dean from the Rebel Without a Cause promotional material. I feel like that is exactly what he would have wanted but also I was so fucking jealous I couldn’t even focus on the fucking, I was green with envy because dude, that fucking rocks. I think this was what inspired me to design a James Dean and Marilyn Monroe themed bathroom when I first moved out on my own. There was probably someone in the 1970s who saw this cardboard cutout of James Dean and was like ‘That is the perfect set dressing for this porno about a college student home for the summer, that is the pinnacle of horny gay college aged guy decor, audiences will love it.’ and they were painfully correct.
Does he- you know, *gestures vaguely* have a life sized cardboard cutout of James Dean in his room?
Okay, but now I want to know if you actually have a lifesize cutout of James Dean?

If slavery was still legal today, finance bros would be day trading people. They would use a big computer to own a guy for a single millisecond. They’d short sell an old man. We’d enslave people simply as punishment for a crime. We’d do mass incarceration. Prisons run for profit
Reminds me of that moment in Dimension 20 (I can't remember which season exactly but I think it was Fantasy High) where Adaine says something like, "That'd be like charging someone for healing them, it'd be messed up" and Kristen is just like, "Yeah, it would, wouldn't it? Good thing we live in a society where that would never happen" while looking at the camera. *Chef's kiss*
just saw a "tragedies iceberg" with titanic and chernobyl at the top and the bhopal disaster near the bottom...i'm begging you to have even the slightest hint of curiosity about the world around you...the bhopal disaster is literally considered the world's worst industrial disaster!!!!!!!!!
it bothers me the way certain industrial disasters are treated as uniquely tragic and terrifying as opposed to others, just because of narratives that can be spread
I haven't seen the video, so I don't know how the poster treated it, but isn't the point of an iceberg to start with the really well known things and then dig deeper into the things that don't get talked about as much?
"im not saying feminism is for everyone but-" the fuck? well im saying that. feminism is for everyone. yes even cishet men will benefit from feminism and cishet men should be feminists because cishet men are indeed harmed by the patriarchy; nowhere near to the extent that women are, but having a culture that is fully equal and anti-misogynist benefits everyone. have we forgotten that lifting up the disenfranchised people in society helps all of us as a collective? "im not saying that universal and unalienable human rights are for everyone but-" YES THE FUCK THEY ARE LOL
Reminds me of a conversation I had a while ago with this girl who just absolutely could not understand basic universal income. Like, yes I do think it should be given to millionaires. Yeah, it should go to the drug addicts too, you're not going to find some nebulous category of person who I don't think deserves to have money in a society where it costs money to be alive.
The entire point of, OK, my phone really wants to call it Anastasia so I guess we’re doing that? The entire point of Anastasia (as administered by a board-certified Anastasiologist) during sugary. Sugary? Haven’t I suffered enough? The entire point of Anastasia during augury. Jesus Christ. Hold up. You know what, augury is preferable to sugary. Augury is obviously performed by an auger (makes sense if you give it a think) whereas sugary is performed by…? A sugardaddy? NO THANK YOU. Anyway. The entire point of Anastasia is so that you don’t know what music your sturgeon. Fuck right off. Was playing. While you were under. You’re not supposed to wake up from Anastasia and immediately realize you managed to get earwormed by Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades” during your sugary.
I want you to know I haven't laughed that hard in a while.
I sure as shit hope so
