I care deeply about my crew, who trusts me to fulfill my function with the immense power I have. Because they trust me, I can banter with my crew in ways that would terrify outsiders. Terrifying outsiders amuses me and I will take every opportunity to do so. If they can't handle it, then they can't handle the mission. I don't care what their past experiences are. Trauma? Skill issue. Get over it.

This is absolutely at its funniest in the Butcher’s Masquerade. His female companion who he’s been training for the last 2 books leaves the party then partway through says that she needs to talk to him about something important in person before the end of the floor but then she shows back up with a new boyfriend and Carl is just like “she was a sister to me lol” and it turns out that she just wanted to talk about their respective drug addictions or something (I might not have read to the part where what that discussion actually was was revealed, but the drug thing is funnier). Then a naked elf chick gives him the fuck me eyes and he just ignores her. And his ex girlfriend comes back from the dead in a prom dress and his cat berates the shit out of her.
