Chapter 19 of Jury of Hearts is up on AO3!

Summary:

With his family's trials on the horizon and nothing holding him to his home apart from his despondent mother and perpetually-drunk father, Draco Malfoy jumps at the opportunity to return to Hogwarts to repeat his final year. At Hogwarts, he can escape his wretched home life and perhaps even rehabilitate his reputation. Things are looking up. That is, until he gets to school and realizes that his entire House hates him. Now Draco must decide between his old life and something new.

New is the last thing Hermione Granger needs. All she wants is for her life to go back to the way it was before the war. When a hearing at the Ministry goes sideways, Hermione accepts Headmistress McGonagall's offer to return to Hogwarts, sure answers lie hidden in the school library that will help her find her missing parents. But Hogwarts is a very different place than she remembers, and Hermione must change as well if she has any hope of overcoming her past to reclaim her future.

anyway the thing about fanfic is that it's not essentially bad or good; it's essentially amateur. some people are absolutely out there writing award-worthy prose (some fic writers ARE award-winning writers IRL!), but that's not the point. the point is that we're all telling campfire stories. it's a community, and it's a way to spend some more time in the worlds and stories that we love.

No offense but I'm tired of all the Jane Austen references in fics. Not just because there's more to literature than JA but also bc that's JKR's fav book (Pride and Prejudice). Can we please think outside this very narrow and single-minded box? Please?

This is a wild take, I fear.

First and foremost, people writing free ff on the internet are allowed to write about anything they want, irrespective of your tastes or opinions. If you feel Jane Austen references are overdone, I think that says a lot more about the ff you read than the full scope of what's out there available to read.

Second, if you have a problem with consuming JKR's favorite books, I have terrible news for you about where the Harry Potter universe originated. We simply can't bin everything associated with JKR. That is an impractical and disingenuous position to take.

Also, who cares what her favorite book is in the first place? What does that have to do with it? Pride and Prejudice is a lot of people's favorite book. It's a witty, well-written romance, a paragon of the genre. Perhaps that could have something to do with how often you encounter it in the ff you consume? May I hazard a guess that you're reading... romance? It's utterly unsurprising that one of the most famous romance novels of all time gets referenced in romantic ff. And there's nothing wrong with that.

If you don't like ff that references Jane Austen's work, go find something you do like instead of wasting everyone's time yucking someone's yum.

I'm not going to lie. I pay attention to the metrics. Data makes me happy. You should see the dashboard I have for Jury of Hearts data. It's substantial.

So it was a fun milestone for me to check my stats today to find that Jury of Hearts had hit 19k views. That's amazing. 19,000 views, and I just happened to refresh it at the right time.

Celebrate the things that bring you joy. Today, this brought me joy, so I'm sharing it with you.
