              Eating hot dogs together on a park bench. It was bound to happen at some point after they started dating. Tommy did sort of set himself up for it when he mentioned preferring something simpler than visiting a five star restaurant for dinner. Even if this is more of a lunch rather than a dinner date. The same principle applied. The event that follows their meal is also not extravagant by any means nor is it intended to be. It’s an idea Abby came up with. Bringing along a blanket with them as they find an open area within the park. The weather is perfect so why not spend time outside rather than cooped up inside?

              ❝This spot is perfect.❞ Abby states, laying the blanket across the grass before moving to lay down on her back. Urging for her boyfriend to do the same. Grabbing his hand as he does so as she gazes up at the sky. Having to wince a little bit due to the sun.

              Sky watching. Not what some people would really consider fun, but it gave them a chance to relax and enjoy the fresh air. Not to mention they were close to each other.

“You will.” If they got to that point, on their way to meet his mother they could take a detour to the cemetery. Tommy didn’t visit often but taking his girlfriend to his father’s grave meant something to him. He turns away from her for a second to grab two plates to remove the sandwiches from the press before they burned. Not wanting to go through the trouble of finding a spatula and then having to clean it, he pulls the sandwiches onto the plates with a napkin, nearly burning his fingers in the process.

He laughs a little at her reaction and slides her plate across the counter to her. “Just a little bit.” He’s grinning as he speaks. He was making fun of her but in a nice way. The future she envisioned was straight out of the Hallmark Channel. Which is interesting to Tommy because he never really thought of his future. When he thought about it, all he saw was work.

Now when Abby asks about kids in the future, he actually has to think about it. “Maybe. One day.” He wanted to do it the right way. Plan it out. He wanted to have a wife, a home, a yard; he wanted to be stable in every aspect of his life, not just his career. “Not sure if I could handle three though. I’ll trade one of your three for a cat.”

              Abby is a little taken aback by his words. Not entirely sure what he meant by them. How would she be able to see his father if he was gone? The idea of visiting the cemetery with him never once crosses her mind. Nevertheless, she chooses to leave it at that for now. Believing she’ll know in due time what her boyfriend was referring to by his statement.

              Suppose the days and nights when she’d stay home and watch Hallmark movies bled into her own life. What she wanted. A happy marriage. A family. Kids. She can’t recall many Hallmark movies that end on a sad note. But she also knows this is the real world. Maybe she’ll never meet the one or settle down and share a life together with someone, but then there’s Tommy. Hell, things are already somewhat playing out like a Hallmark Channel movie. Friends who eventually start dating later on.

“I just went to my law school gala.” In college, Tommy didn’t do dances, he did sorority and fraternity parties. He was a typical rich white boy when it came to college. He somehow managed to keep his grades up though, at least enough to get into a top law school. “I haven’t been to an event like this since so it’s been a couple of years.” Around four or five years to be exact. “And I didn’t have a date then.” He didn’t have a girlfriend at the time and he had not wanted to bring a random fling to something as high profile as this because yes, within the law community it was a big deal.

“You look beautiful, by the way.” Tommy had been speechless but that was only because he’d seen Abby in jeans and tshirts at the bar, pants and a dressier top for school and sweats at home. This dress was above and beyond anything he could imagine. “You look like a different person. A model, or a movie star or something.”

              ❝So you went alone?❞ Abby doesn’t attempt hiding the sense of surprise in her tone of voice. That’s not what she thought he’d say. Of course she sees nothing wrong with people attending events like this without a date. They could have shown up with friends or on their own. So long as they enjoyed themselves that’s what really mattered at the end of the day. Then again, she’s not sure if she would've wanted to come tonight if Tommy couldn’t join her.

“You only have to worry about one.” One in law, he means. Tommy avoided talking about his family but if she paid attention to their talks, she would have noticed he never mentioned his father. It wasn’t until he said that out loud that he realized that maybe she thought he didn’t have a good relationship with his father. “My father passed away a few years ago. It’s just me and my mom.” Which explained why his mother was so attached to him and why Tommy checked in often. They really only had each other.

Tommy picks up his coffee, taking another drink from it before it got cold. “Three kids and a dog? White picket fence too?”

              Abby swears she can feel her heart sink in her chest at the mention of his father’s passing. ❝I’m sorry, Tommy.❞ It made more sense now why his mother was brought up more often than his father. She just never felt it was her place to ask personal questions like that. Not wanting to cross an invisible line or anything. ❝I would’ve loved to have met him.❞ She says with a small smile. Unable to tell if her comment helped or not. All she knows is that it’s the truth, especially if Tommy is anything like his father was.

Tommy had not been to one of these things in years; since he graduated law school. He was more anxious about this one than his own. For some reason or another, he wasn’t looking forward to running into any of his old professors, at least not in this setting. 

There were two reasons why Tommy agreed to this: (1) Abby asked and, (2) With their busy schedules they didn’t have too many date nights, and definitely not one that required formal dress.

Punctual as he always tried to be, Tommy showed up at her door wearing a simple black tuxedo with a white shirt and a black bow tie. There was something though, a red pocket square since she had told him her dress was read. His hair was slicked back, he was clean shaven and he looked like he put a lot of effort into himself.

Abby got one up on him when she said he looked amazing. Tommy didn’t say anything. He was at a loss for words. He’d never seen Abby dressed up before and that dress fit her like a glove.

              Abby takes Tommy’s hand shortly after she walks out her front door. Walking with him down the flight of stairs leading out of the apartment building. While there was an available elevator to use, she was only on the second floor. Even though wearing high heels with her dress did make it a little harder than normal. Causing her to be a little closer to her boyfriend’s eye level than usual. It does concern her some that he’s failed to say much of anything upon arriving. Did he not like her dress? Was she simply looking too far into it? Deciding it’s best to not ask directly, she tries a different approach instead.

Tommy quickly gets to work on their almost-midnight snack. Ham and cheese. Nowhere near as close as fancy as their dinner. It was good though. It wasn’t planned but it gave Abby a good glimpse of Tommy. Successful career, old money but also just a regular guy who was more than okay with something simple and low key.

He is so focused on making their sandwiches that he doesn’t look up when Abby speaks but he nods, “Yeah.” He places the top slice of bread on each sandwich. “Definitely pushing your luck.” Then places both sandwiches on the press to warm them up and melt the cheese. That’s when he finally looks up at Abby. “I don’t want a movie. I want to get to know you, as my girlfriend.” Relationship goals, what she envisioned her future like, if she wanted to get married in five years, ten or never, if there were any crazy exes he should worry about, if she wanted no kids or six kids, if her parents saw her with a type of guy; all these little details.

              Abby firmly believes Tommy is only messing with her at first. What reason would he have against her picking out a movie for them to watch together on the couch? Her curiosity is close to getting the best of her until she hears his reason why. Oh. It makes sense. While Tommy does know somethings about her from their talks, she never really went into much information in regards to what she was looking for out of a relationship. Especially when – at the same – she was under the impression he didn’t see her as more than a friend.

❛ permission would be nice, ❜ he answers back, turning around to open the cabinet just above he fridge to get the pills for abby. shaking out two for the girl, he places the cap with the pills in them, in front of her for her to take on her own time. good thing downstairs is a safe zone and anything that could potentially get them into ‘trouble’ was upstairs where only the housemates were allowed. eyebrows raise momentarily when he hears her hum out her response to having finally tried the omelette he’d prepared just a few moments ago.

nodding his head, the senior agent takes another sip of his tea, ❛ glad you like it, ❜ comes his response. watching her curiously when she stops so suddenly, briggs merely nods to her response. ❛ ahhh, ❜ a knowing eyebrow raise follows the noise and then he’s cracking his neck and rolling his shoulders back. ❛ it’s a nice place to go for some cheap drinks and good vibes, ❜ it’s not like she couldn’t or already has figured that out for herself.

leaning against the counter, he wraps his arms around himself and he nods. ❛ yeah, well… we’re private people, ❜ he answers. ❛ and with the amount of people living here, we’ve all got to agree to change it and that ain’t happenin’ anytime soon. ❜ if you squinted, you might be able to tell that it was more than just a comment, it was a warning. and even though everyone’s supposed to have an equal say, paul started this house, his word held the most weight. ❛ – how’d you sleep? ❜ the question coming out after he thinks about whether or not he’d asked her that before.

              Abby gives a small nod in understanding. While she would enjoy inviting friends over if she lived in such a spacious home with an incredible view of the beach and ocean doesn’t mean everyone would want the same. Of course her curiosity does wonder off to the reason why, but it’s none of her business. Then again, this is the same man she swears she heard on the phone talking about some type of drug buy. Is that the type of private life he’s referring to? She can only hope that her boyfriend is not in on the arrangement, especially with all the half-truths lately. Although he did finally bring her here.

              ❝Good. I slept better than I thought I would.❞ New place and everything. ❝Mike thought it was a good idea if I wasn’t alone.❞ She gives a slight shrug of her shoulders. Abby would’ve preferred if she was able to sleep beside him, but that was out of the question. Mike already went ahead with getting a couple pillows and blankets for her setup downstairs before she could even ask about sleeping upstairs.

“I trust you.” It was just coffee, not that deep but Tommy trusted Abby with his drinks at the bar; coffee was less dangerous. He walks over and picks up the cup, takes a sip and giving a little nod of approval. Strong enough to keep him awake, not strong enough to be bitter.

Hearing her say she’s hungry too, Tommy immediately sets the cup down on the kitchen counter to go make them a couple of sandwiches. Girlfriend or not, she was still his guest. He wasn’t going to make her make them food. She already fixed their cups of coffee. 

“I’ve got it.” He says, already making his way to the refrigerator to grab the ham and cheese. Nothing fancy. He only shopped for one fancy meal, everything else was quick and simple.

“Can this be our first official date? Coffee on the couch? ..and sandwiches.” The sandwiches part somehow made it feel less romantic but they were hungry.

              First official date. Coffee on the couch. Ham and cheese sandwiches. The last bit doesn’t scream romantic, but they’ve had talks about this. Well, something similar. Eating hot dogs on a bench. Suppose this would be considered the next closest things to hot dogs on a bench that they could find.

              ❝Yes, but on one condition. We cuddle on the couch together after.❞ It sounds like they’ll be sharing a bed tonight. Abby wouldn’t be too disappointed if they simply fall asleep on the couch together in each other’s arms. In other words, she is looking forward to their date night.

             This almost feels like Abby’s junior and senior years of prom all over again. Standing in the mirror as she looks at herself in the long red sparkling dress. Nerves settling in. But why is she nervous? Tommy is someone she’s been dating for a few months now. They’ve known each other even longer than that. It’s not very often when they choose to spend a luxurious evening together. So he doesn’t normally see her dress like this. But this could be fun for the both of them. At the same time, she’s going to be going with someone who she’s fallen for. Hence the reason why it almost felt like prom all over again. Never has she felt so strongly about someone before. So it wasn’t a difficult decision for her to ask him to come to the college’s event with her.

              Abby also made sure to be ready by the time he stated he’d show up. This included her hair, makeup, jewelry, everything! Then she hears a knock at the door. Taking in a breath – once again, why is she so nervous? – she makes her way for the door, opening it to find Tommy in a tuxedo. He looks handsome. Then again, when doesn’t he?
