Arti, offline name Hal, known here as @catsarehumanstoo, died on Saturday 9th May of complications following surgery. He was surrounded by family and friends, including me.

I've been friends with Arti since we were 12 years old, and we grew up alongside each other both online and in-person. He was kind, clever and generous, with a wickedly dry sense of humour, and I will miss him more than words can express. He loved cooking, comics and films, of which his absolute favourite was Speed Racer (2008).

"I'm going out," Tim said. He had changed, and was now wearing a pair of sweats and a hoodie; there was a backpack slung over one shoulder. "Okay," Superman said. He was floating six inches above the bed. "I need you to stay inside. Gotham isn't safe after dark." Superman snorted. "Babe, I'm Superman." "I know. Just… please?" "Whatever." "Will you stay indoors tonight." Superman rolled over so he was looking straight into Tim's eyes. "Yes," he lied. Tim's eyes narrowed for a moment, but then he shrugged. "Cool. I'll probably be back pretty late, so don't wait up for me." Superman waited five minutes after he heard the front door slam shut before opening the window and neatly swooping out. The air outside was heavy, humid from the summer heat lingering in the darkness, and scented with pollutants. Superman paused for a moment, and took in the sight of Gotham spread below him. The city lights sparkled in the night; red and white along the major roads, pink and green and blue where the neon nightclubs glittered their advertisements. Superman had seen bigger cities, of course. But only in the infopacks that Cadmus had uploaded to his head; seeing the evidence of massed human life spread out beneath him was, like, totally different.

"Surfing can't be that much harder than skateboarding," Tim said this morning, in the voice of a man about to get severely humbled by the ocean. "I'm sure I'll get the hang of it pretty quickly." Kon's in for a very entertaining afternoon.

Tim surfaces with a gasp, coughing up saltwater. “Blech!”

Lounging a comfortable few inches above the waves, Kon laughs. Tim’s hair is sodden and weighed down around his head; he looks kind of like the girl from The Ring. If the girl from The Ring was a scarred, sexy, pouting skater dude floating in a sparkling cerulean sea, anyways.

“That was, like, the most spectacular wipeout I’ve seen in a hot minute, Rob!” Kon grins down at him. Because he’s a loving and helpful best friend, he tugs the runaway surfboard back over the waves with a tendril of his aura down the ankle leash, so that Tim can get an arm over it as he splutters and scowls.

And splutter and scowl he does! Tim coughs again, pushes his hair up and out of his face, and rasps, “Shut up.”

“No, like, seriously!” Kon grins harder. “You went one way, the surfboard went the other, like—Whammo! Amazing!”
