I think its moreso that people know on an objective level that bugs are animals maybe, but the core of it is that they generally don't treat them with the same compassion that they do other animals. Like how most people know on an objective level that humans are animals, but don't treat them the same way they treat "animals". Bugs are treated as "bugs"

I took a 45 second video of a worm in my driveway yesterdays yesterday. And yesterday I got out of my car and started thinking about that worm and as I opened the fence to get to my house, I see an identical worm (this worm was like 8 inches long so it felt quite large and unique) and ended up taking an almost 2 minute video of it. Bugs rule.
