What if the balrog in Moria and the Balrog who huffed and puffed and blew Turgon's house down was the same man. Like Gandalf shows up and whips out that thang (Turgon's sword that he found in a hole) and is like "Round 2, motherfucker"
FIRST TRUE COLOR PHOTO OF AN ATOMIC NUCLEUS!
FIJMU News 10-19-21
Today, the world's most powerful microscope has photographed in real color the core of a single atom. The nucleus of an atom is like the delicious yolk of a hard boiled quantum egg, containing protons and neutrons (red) as held together by gluons (tan filaments). All known substances are made of atoms with nuclei like the one seen above.
The atom used was a Thulium atom because of its highly photogenic traits, bright coloration, and nice atomic number. According to microscopy professor Minnie Lewker, "Atoms have been photographed before but never in real color. They usually look almost like waves of light and dark instead of real, tangible objects as they are."
The same microscope team was also able to take the first known photograph of an electron:
There is (somehow) an xkcd for that
This is literally what people are talking about when they say AI will be used to mainstream widely held bigotry. LLMs are trained on frequency and probability -> straight relationships are more well represented in the dataset -> straight pronouns and terms become the "correct" normal.
This is a form of backdoor bigotry from both normative facts (there are more straight than gay relationships) and well represented bigoted beliefs (men are superior to women).
Combine this with the mass of people inclined to believe (and being encouraged to believe) that if AI says and does something it must be correct
"AIs" are just giant statistical models that work by detecting consistent patterns in data. When creating an AI, it has to be "trained" on input data created by humans. Unfortunately subconscious biases are often the most consistent patterns in that input data.
it would be so awesome
it would be so cool
A German regional court has ruled that Google is directly liable for the content of its AI search overviews. According to the court, previou
Let’s fucking go
This is HUGE.
1. The court holds Google responsible for statements made by its AI, considering them Google's statements (search engines have limited liability for results in their engine as they're the words of other sites/companies/people), meaning when their AI lies/hallucinates they're liable for the defamation/harm resulting from those statements.
2. Google's defense that customers are generally aware of the lack of reliability and are responsible for fact checking was dismissed. As the court pointed out, that would "significantly diminish" AI Search's stated purpose and it can't be distinguished from Google's business practices/statements as a search tool.
3. Studies have found about 91% of Google's everyday AI responses are accurate, leaving millions of searches per HOUR with potential liability for falsehoods. 56% of correct responses weren't supported by the sources the AI listed. Both of which mean Google is now liable for a LOT more AI "errors."
4. Google was held liable for 80% of court costs in this case and this precedent is expected to reverberate around the world. This is a massive shift from the 3rd-party search provider role Google has previously played and it comes right as they've tied ALL searches to their AI search.
TL;DR Google reeeeeally stepped in it this time.

Tom Baker’s thoughts on a female Doctor from a 1983 convention panel ❤️
I didn't think that it could get any worse after google decided to show jermasus as the main image result for searching "jerma" but clearly I've been proven wrong because the new image is truly much much worse

Every single image is just...
I keep seeing birth rates discourse end in "and I guess the long term solution is exowombs" and, ignoring questions of how long such a technology will take to make, that is not the issue with birth rates. The carrying is not the issue, it's the raising and paying for children that's the stop gap. If it became possible to 3D print babies, that would not change the population growth rate more than a little.
If we could somehow solve the care and investment issue—say, by the discovery of magical brownies who loooove taking care of kids and gladly work for a saucer of milk—then the actual production of kids would not be hard. Pregnancy is a pain but not a bad tradeoff, if the kid isn't also a huge time and money suck. And if society still can't make enough kids, surrogacy is a known thing that could be publicly funded.
Also, we are at the tail end of the largest population boom in human history. The human population has quadrupled since in the last century and octupled in the last two centuries, due to increased availability of resources, reduced infant mortality, etc.
For the past 200 years, there have been significantly more people being born than dying. People have naturally accepted this as the status quo because it's been happening for 10+ generations, but in the grand scheme of things it is abnormal. At some point the birth rate is going to go back to replacement level and the population is going to level off because infinite growth isn't sustainable.
Yes there are going to be some practical issues with an aging population as that transition occurs, but that is inevitable and far more easy to deal with than trying to artificially prop up birth rates.

hey. I will never, ever, believe or engage with callout posts. don't send them to me, I will not read them. if you put them in my ask box I will delete them. if you reply them to my posts I will block you. I refuse to be weaponized just cause you have a hateboner for somebody, I don't care how justified you think it is. I wouldn't care even if you had evidence of a murder, because I am not a cop. I will *not* help you ostracize anyone or hurt anyone's rep. so don't try to make me, and don't get upset at me for not letting you. end of story.

this is such a fantastic and reassuring response
I think it's a consequence of viewing good and evil as inherent character traits or moral natures that people can have rather than a series of independent moral decisions.
In that framework, a "good person" committing a good action or a "bad person" committing a bad action are not seen as moral actions that affect one's opinion of the person; they are simply seen as the person acting in accord with their supposed moral nature. On the other hand, a "good person" committing a bad action or a "bad person" committing a good action are seen as moral actions and do affect one's opinion of that person, because they are acting against their supposed moral nature. So in a twisted way, "good people" are only given credit for their bad actions and "bad people" are only given credit for their good actions.
And unfortunately we see this way of thinking extended from fictional characters to real world politics.
