Was really interested going into this movie because as someone who isn’t very up to speed on any backrooms lore besides the og post I like the backrooms best when there are no monsters, but the environment itself makes you feel unsafe. You’re paranoid and panicking but then you get out and realize that there was nothing to be afraid of, nothing was even there to chase you in the first place it was just your mind tricking itself.

So I think it’s so interesting that this movie did both- there is a monster but it’s You. It’s a monster you made up it’s a physical manifestation of your fear. It hurts people because you hurt people. You’re unsafe because you created the environment and that means your fear is out to get you.

Exactly. The paranoia this film induces is so good and I like that it's kinda integral to the enjoyment of the film. I wasn't as scared of pirate Clark as I was of the pool rooms. I keep bracing myself for jumpscares that never came only to get spooked by things like the audio lures.

"the most unrealistic thing about project hail mary is that a woman is in charge" WRONG look up the glass cliff. women are much more likely to be promoted to positions of power when things are going poorly and people need a woman to blame. she refers to herself as the "world's whipping boy." the person put in the position to have to commit ecological and humanitarian crimes of that scale in order to save the earth would only ever be a woman.

i think we are seriously underestimating the impact that fandom culture has had on broader society. and i mean this as a bad thing

the vast majority of people are not participating in it but by its nature it contributes such a vast percentage of the internet’s total content that memetic spread and influence is inevitable in our post-covid world where everyone is chronically online

the same way that the mindset of porn watchers has infiltrated everything, even for those who don’t watch porn, we live in porn world

but we also live in fandom world, influencer world, shitposter world, and, to be honest, autist world. in terms of cognitive rigidity

most people are chronically online yet most people don’t post. therefore everyone who posts is having an outsized effect on the larger culture. and people who post are also more likely to be spirited and energetic political extremists who can come up with endless disingenuous deflections and ad hominem attacks if you try to add any nuance. which poisons our overall discourse
