"...Also I'm not sure calling pirate borg mediocre is fair to mediocre from what I recall of discussion of it..."
man the public defender discourse pisses me off so bad. yeah. yeah I do think that every single person deserves representation. yeah that includes people who *have* committed rape and murder and abuse. when I say every single person I mean every single person. if your idea of justice excludes one person it excludes everyone. next question
“so you’re saying you’d represent someone who has admitted to sexual assault?” i’m saying I have.
“so you’re saying you’d represent someone who has admitted to domestic violence?” i’m saying i have.
"so you’re saying you’d represent someone who has admitted to child abuse?" i'm saying i have.
and i am saying i have given each and every one of those clients the same level of professionalism, effort, and zealous advocacy i have given my clients who are victims of the same. that is how due process works, and every person is guaranteed it.
i have nothing but respect and admiration for my colleagues in the public interest sector who represent those who have committed and/or been accused any and all crimes, no matter how "morally reprehensible" others may find them.
public defenders are among the best, brightest, and most selfless attorneys out there. they are on the front lines of combating the carceral state and protecting the rights of every day people. get it straight in your heads. thanks.
Being a public defender is one of the most essential and under-recognized jobs someone can do to help maintain our democracy. Fuck absolutely anyone and everyone who goes after them. If you’re against public defenders you are fighting for fascism. There’s nothing more to say on the matter.
Pretty much anytime people are trying to smear an ex-lawyer politician by saying "they represented murderers/pedophiles/whatever," what they really mean is "they were a public defender and made sure the system treated everyone fairly, which is the only way a judicial system can ever actually dispense justice." Sounds like someone we need more of in government.
Depriving the guilty of the best representation they can have is depriving the innocent of that, too, because THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF THE TRIAL and we're not assuming people are guilty. Even people who confessed, no, because sometimes people give false confessions.
Ir doesn't matter, the justice system is adversarial and we shouldn't presume guilt.
You could be falsely accused of a terrible crime. Would you not want robust legal representation? Even if you didn’t have the means to pay for a lawyer yourself?
Once more, courts don’t stop at the district level. There’s the two levels of appellate courts above them. And the federal Supreme Court if it ends up being a constitutional issue. Cases don’t always end at the guilty verdict.
The most common appeal is “ineffective assistance of counsel” (IAOC). IAOC is when your attorney did such a bad job defending you that your trial was constitutionally unfair. See Strickland v. Washington, 466 U.S. 668 (1984).
If a defendant wins an IAOC appeal, they get a new trial.
Usually, though, they still have to prove that they might have been found not-guilty if their attorney hadn’t screwed up (in legal speak, we say the attorney created prejudice against their own client). However, if the attorney screws up badly enough, it doesn’t matter how obvious the guilt is, they still get a new trial.
And now you’ve got an even longer time since the original crime and witnesses who might not want to testify again or are unavailable for other reasons or are dead. It is harder to prove guilt at a second trial because of that and the new defense attorney now knows all the weaknesses of the state’s case and can exploit them.
Do you know what prevents successful IAOC claims? Good public defenders.
On what I think this argument chain is referring to: There's being a public defender in the sense of making sure that people are getting a fair trial and treated as innocent beyond a shadow of a doubt to ensure that they're treated fairly and not falsely punished, and then there's the actual scum that actually try pulling shit like "My client's not at fault for doing such vile things, because this 5-year old seduced him."
I'm sure I don't need to name names.
I feel like I need to share this because idk if Europeans are familiar with the presence of Aldi in the US, but at least especially in my area they’ve been growing a lot recently. Like Aldi bought out some local failing grocery chains where I live (Louisiana) and have opened Aldis in all these somewhat rural communities and small towns, which for the record I’m fine with
But as a result of this they are advertising a lot more in my area and also in many cases, the people in these areas have never been confronted with Aldi or any European grocery store. So the ads that Aldi is pushing out to its new US customer base feature a cowboy shopping at Aldi who is explaining to new Aldi customers how Aldi works. Like this cowboy is explaining you gotta put a quarter in the shopping cart and why there are very little name brands. A cowboy is how they want to reach their American customer base. They gave us a cowboy
Here he is, the Aldi Cowboy

ok this looks ultra mega based, are you kidding me? can you imagine the bullshit i could get up to with this bad boy? fuck yes i want ten
Wait are iPhone bros coping because Apple has to be more universal? Lol.
Boo hoo i'll be able to add more physical storage to my phone and be able to change out batteries if they degrade as well as all these other optional features I won't have to touch
Continuing in the trend of political cartoons depicting milquetoast moderate positions seem so much cooler and more badass than they are
I love how they add totally absurd things no one is asking for to make the idea look crazy. And still, I must emphasize, failing to make this look like a bad idea.
"Is this what you want? Is this ugly stupid bullcrap what you want??" the biggest loudest idiot in the room asks, holding up a picture of the hottest looking shit I've ever seen
"... Corpo media suites are seeing the demographic bill start to come due on legacy media brands like Stargate and are factoring that into their beancounter calculations and are coming to the conclusion of "You know what? Fuck it." The Olds won't show up and support your legacy media show unless it's exactly like it was from their childhood, and The Youngs won't show up to watch some Unc Show dedicated to giving closure to dangling plot threads that happened before 9/11. And if you make a new version of the show, The Olds are gonna bitch and moan about how it's not like their childhood while they doxx and harass all actors involved in it, and The Youngs won't watch it anyway because who gives a shit about That Thing From The 90s: But Younger And Flashier?
Which brings us back to "You know what? Fuck it."... "
"... This is not a website I want to contribute value to anymore, so I have deleted my file and image uploads. Not my posts, though. My posts make the website worse..."
The Germans really cooked making "Hobbyless behaviour" an insult. It is both devastating, applicable to a wide range of people and behaviours, and doesn't resort to swearing.
Man ranting on the internet about the Superbowl halftime show or complaining that something is "woke"? Hobbyless Behaviour. Girls mocking another girl for not looking right? Hobbyless Behaviour. Mindless vandalism? Hobbyless Behaviour.
It is more powerful than "get a life" or the English "You're Sad" because it gets to the central point of the matter, and that is wonderful. Danke, Deutsch.
The 83-year-old director is backing and serving as an advisor for an AI upstart called Black Forest Labs and played with AI during preproduc
"Only". First off, it may start there, but I bet it won't end there. Also, there are storyboard artists. It's a whole-ass job category, that shouldn't be replaced by AI any more than the others. Ice Pick Joe didn't die for this shit.
People use Ai when they don't value the work being performed. It's clear that Scorsese doesn't see the storyboard artists as valuable contributors to the creative process.

"... This image is old enough that some of you out there have dads that jerked it to a print copy of it..."
Good to see San Antonio’s queer community saying HELL NO to Greg Abbott’s absolute fucking loser behavior. Rainbow crosswalks aren’t allowed anymore? Okay, let the LGBTQts take the whole sidewalk then, dickmunch!
every major structural social problem right now is basically "we don't have enough skilled workers on the ground" and the reason is always "well we've been intentionally underpaying and understaffng them for decades to increase corporate profits" and somehow the news always just mentions the "shortage" without digging into the cause
air travel is a mess? shortage of air traffic controllers - for some mysterious reason
logistics a mess? shortage of truck drivers - for some mysterious reason
public transit can't meet demand? shortage of bus drivers - for some mysterious reason
We even mysteriously have shortages of doctors, nurses, teachers... FOR SOME MYSTERIOUS REASON
FUCKING PAY PEOPLE AND HIRE ENOUGH STAFF
Yes and: Make education more affordable and achievable!!
The destruction of public and higher education and the degradation and subjugation of workers has been an active part of conservative policy for more than fifty years.
Related: when conservatives say "no one wants to work anymore", what they mean is "no one wants to give up a substantial portion of the fruits of their labor in order to enrich an idle capital-holding class".

Cyberpop is a retro-futuristic style that first emerged in Japan during the 1990s under the more generic name "cyber fashion" (サイバーファッション). It is characterized by some fantasy, futurism, and a positive aura, as opposed to Cyberpunk and Cybergoth, which are rather negative and dark (post-apocalyptic).

we gotta get back to torrent distribution, i just watched someone eat eight grand in bandwidth charges because they ran a direct-download piracy site with local file hosting through cloudflare. torrents were invented literally for this exact reason
torrents work like this
i have a file or folder on my pc that i want to share with other people. let's call it gayshit.mp3
unfortunately gayshit.mp3 is 750mb and im not paying for discord nitro so i need another way to send it
i put it into qbittorrent and it makes a torrent file. this is essentially a very small file that points to gayshit.mp3 so other computers can find it. kinda like a treasure map
i send this tiny file to my friend, who loads it into qbittorrent. their computer takes a moment to find mine over the vast expanse of cyberspace and then (as long as my pc is running and the file is still where it should be), it gets copied from my hard drive to theirs
this is the cool part: if somebody else loads that tiny file, they can download it from both of us. if i'm offline but my friend is on, the third person can still get it. this also means that if two people have separate halves of the file, they can download the other half from each other. as long as some combination of people have the pieces between them, they can all have the whole thing.
crucially this does not require a server!!! you can just upload the file to a few people and as long as they keep it, it's still accessible. as long as somebody, somewhere is still connected, it's available forever. the only way it goes away is if everybody disconnects from it.
please learn to torrent
An expert guide to get started using torrentsTorrents are one of the most popular forms of file sharing on the internet, accounting for over
always use qbittorrent, do not use bittorrent or utorrent.
