thinking about shane and being set up to fail. i think there's two versions of it that they play with
sometimes it's really obvious. ilya invents some totally impossible and arbitrary task for shane because he loves watching how hard he'll try for him even knowing that he's going to fail, and he's going to get punished, and there's nothing he can do. and shane loves it because it reminds him he's not allowed to be perfect here, he's not in control, he doesn't have to do everything right because he can't do everything right because ilya won't let him, but there's still going to be pain and then comfort, predictable and safe, and all he has to do is accept it
and sometimes it's subtler. something he usually could do, maybe, but not today. or something just a little out of reach. one more orgasm than he has in him. just slightly more pain than he can take without flinching. something he can tell ilya didn't just make up to make him fail at, something he actually wants that shane can't give him. and this version of being set up to fail shane hates. like openly sobbing, crying, apologizing, legitimately miserable that he can't be good (in a way that will embarrass him when he's out of subspace because he knows it's not that serious but in the moment it feels so real). begging and begging to be punished and so grateful when he is. so distraught that it probably scares the shit out of ilya the first time it happens, and then, unfortunately for shane, ilya realizes that he loves getting to see the evidence of how truly desperate shane is to please him.
