Hello to anybody who happens to read this. No recent art. Just a bunch of sketches. I got my barista certificate a few weeks ago, so Iâve been working at my works cafe. Itâs really rewarding & Iâm actually thoroughly enjoying it.
Anywho. Thank you for all the nice notes on some of my recent pieces. I never had realised how many people enjoy seeing my art. So thank you. It means a lot to me.
Do you have any advice on how to get better at rendering?
For me, personally, rendering only really clicked for me once I began doing traditional art again. I use a lot of charcoal and so I started applying the techniques I used on paper with charcoal to my digital art.
But besides that, a lot of studying, really. Studying looks super different for a lot of people. But for me, itâs mostly copying real photos of people & also copying artists I like. Then, applying everything I learnt into my own pieces.
Learning about 3 dimensional forms also helps exponentially. It helps give you an understanding of just How Things Look In Spaces. Helps you also understand lights and shadows.
As for resources to use, Proko on YouTube has a lot of really helpful videos. They go over a wide variety of topics and I highly recommend checking them out. Also, in my local area for a while they did free beginner art classes. Even though Iâm not a beginner, going over the basics really helps. So if in your area they do anything like that definitely try it out.
I use three main websites to study. Those being Pinterest, Line of Action and WikiArt. Pinterest is a little bit tricky these days, due to the unfortunate amount of AI, but, you know.
I know this isnât just advice on how to get better at rendering per se, but being âgoodâ at rendering relies on you having an understanding of the objects around how and how they interact with light. So, yes. Draw that sphere 1000 times all you want, but at the end of the day itâs how you use that obtained knowledge from drawing those 1000 spheres thatâs going to benefit your art.
And finally: Donât stop trying. Even if you think your rendering looks ugly, just keep on trying. Rendering is difficult. You should be proud of yourself for giving it a go.
