Hi.
Here's a breakdown of the musical leitmotifs used in the soundtrack of the Spy x Family anime.
I've been spending the past few months putting this together. It's the first time I make a video essay, the first time I record myself for public viewing, the first time I edit such a big video... and I'm not a native English speaker. It definitely was a challenge. But I'm quite happy with it, so I hope you enjoy :D
A not-so-quick Too Long Didn't Watch, because I still wanna share my findings from this analysis with people who don't want to or can't watch the video:
There's a set of themes that I named "STRIX", which play in a serious tone when it's Twilight doing his spy stuff, but when it's Anya looking up to what a cool spy he is, they play in a comical manner by a loud and slightly off-tune recorder. Perfectly symbolizing the Serious Spy and the Little Hopeful Girl who wants to be like him respectively.
There's two different leitmotifs for Yor and the Thorn Princess. However, the latter one has appeared in scenes where Yor is still herself, just putting her assassin physical skills to use, like when she parkours her way to Eden to give Anya her gym clothes. Or when she gets drunk and kicks Loid's ass in episode 5.
Yor's leitmotif is the same melody from the lullaby she sings in episode 24, the one Twilight remembers his mother singing to him.
There's two melodies connected to family moments. Usually they are played side by side, but near the end of Yuri's first visit at the Forger house, the song starts playing as Loid offers him a place within the family, then cuts off as Yuri rejects him.
The second "Family" melody and one of the "STRIX" themes have similar musical elements. The Forgers are, after all, a family that was created as part of Operation Strix.
The music for Damian emphasizes his depth and his potential for growth.
Twilight as a character doesn't have a leitmotif - leitmotifs are used to represent a character, a dynamic, a situation, etc. and the lack of a distinct theme for Twilight adds to the element of him not having an identity. While his Japanese voice actor does a great job using different voice timbers for each facet of the character - Twilight, Loid, and the real man behind it all - the character is still biased. The background music is an omniscient and objective narrator, so it doesn't enforce specific interpretations on the character. It allows us our own.
The only theme I could find that could be, potentially, the theme of the man behind all the masks, is the melody that plays in the first episode, when he remembers the reason he became a spy: to build a world where children don't cry (a very important character moment, if you ask me). As the series progresses and we, hopefully, see more of his real self coming through, I'm curious to see if they'll use this melody as his leitmotif.
BONUS ROUND: the insert song that plays in the "Loidman" scenes is a rock cover of Bondman's theme. Even the music was in on the game.
A short comic for this cute thread fic by @sushib0mb on Twitter aka @keswrites24.
This frame goes by very quickly, you wouldn't notice it when watching the episode normally. But it caught my attention in this gifset and now I can't stop thinking about the way Loid looks at Yor here.
It's just so soft, and there's even that little blush there. It might have looked like a small moment, but it was big when it came to their family bonds. Yor made something for them, channelling her memories of the food that her mother used to make in the past into her own care for Loid and Anya in the present, and they loved it. Their poor stomachs have been at it every time Yor tried to make something, but bless their hearts they never complained about it (aside from that time Anya called her a bad cook in a quick response to avoid making Loid suspect her of reading his mind). Yet Yor strived to get better and make something with love and care, even if at first she thought that she was doing it to keep her job.
I am a very lazy cook myself, but there's something about cooking for someone else and them responding so positively to it, especially when all your efforts to do that up to now have only led to stomachaches and reluctant acceptance. For her "I need to be a good cook for my cover!" argument, Yor only needed a "That's good enough to not give me indigestion", but with pouring her entire heart into learning to cook, that kind of poured into the meal as well, and so instead she got them smiling at her for what she offered them.
And her reaction was amplified by Loid's reaction. He wasn't just enjoying the meal, he was happy to receive that from her, appreciating the effort she put into it and admiring her growing cooking skill - and it's important that those came from someone who never demanded her to cook for them as part of her household responsibilities. It was a genuine "thank you for dedicating time and effort into making this beautiful thing for us".
For us. Because he was also happy that Anya was happy with it.
Yor worked hard to offer them something, unknowingly putting so much heart into it, and they reciprocated that - Anya on a much simpler level by happily munching on the food, and Loid with this soft look. It's pretty simple - but it's with simple, little things that bonds are created and most importantly, last.
I cry every time I think about the Forgers choosing each other over and over again.
Initially, Anya wanted someone to take her out of the orphanage so she read Twilight’s mind and fulfill every criteria he needed. When she found out he was a spy, she was even more excited that her new Papa is a cool spy! Meanwhile, Yor just needed a one-time boyfriend for the party to put her brother’s mind at ease and Twilight just happened to say the right thing for her to take the initiative.
Anya and Yor both initially chose Twilight/Loid for their own purposes without having any deep connection to him.
However, this changed during these two important scenes. After being kidnapped and put in danger due to the nature of Twilight’s job, Anya saw a glimpse of the man underneath the masks. Same with Yor, his words at the party really resonated deeply with her. He understood what it was like to sacrifice yourself for the sake of others. Even without him knowing it, he saw the essence of who Yor Briar is.
The second time that Anya and Yor chose Twilight/Loid, it was because they saw something in him that they can related to. They (even Twilight) wanted to be accept for who they really are. Despite the circumstances of being a fake family and the lies, the Forgers are the closest thing that these three have where they feel like they are and can be accepted for who they are (if this makes sense).
The lies will unravel one day and they will have to confront them. It will be painful but I really believe they will overcome it because there’s no one else who will understand and accept them like each other.
One thing i really love about spy x family is this pattern where they do the emotional thing thats true to themselves instead of the rational objective thing that would be good for the mission, and in the long run that turns out to be the best move.
Take the school interview. Getting furious on Anya’s behalf when the asshole makes her cry and storming out was objectively a pretty bad move for the mission. Operation strix could have ended right there. But at the same time, showing their decency and care for their daughter won over henderson and things worked out. Plus, because they acted like a real family in that moment, it puts them beyond suspicion. Imagine if someone later tried to convince henderson that loid was a spy, and they only enrolled anya to infiltrate the school. He’d laugh in their face! He’d say let me tell you a story about how they nearly didn’t get in because they loved their daughter so much, theres no way that family are spies.
Another great example is Anya’s relationship with Damian. Punching him in the face on day one… not a great move for operation “get close to Damian and use that friendship to get info on his dad” But in the long run, this again puts Anya above suspicion. If someone later tried to tell Damian that his friend Anya just got close to him to spy on him, he’d think it ridiculous. He’d say of course thats not the case, we hated each other when we first met, if she wanted to spy on me she’d have tried to suck up to me like everyone else.
Despite being a story all about deception, the way the narrative consistently rewards the Forgers for acting like a real family and being true to themselves gives it this really sweet wholesome core. It emphasizes that this is a story about the fake family becoming real and all of them becoming their best selves in the process.
