we’re so lucky that gilgamesh survived and is a banger. can you imagine if we found the oldest written human story ever recorded and it sucked balls.
Okay but consider: what if The Epic of Gilgamesh was like, Sumeria's equivalent Twilight or ACOTAR or something? What if it only survived because it was wildly popular, and was actually kind of mid or even straight up trash in the eyes of the society?
Maybe they were actually into copper sale dramas...
rocky always yells “enrichment for grace! enrichment for grace!” when he has a new invention to make the humans time more interesting on erid. grace, while appreciative, replies ‘I know I’m in a zoo enclosure but could we maybe not call it that? I feel like a bear getting thrown a pumpkin covered in peanut butter.’ rocky simply gives him a thumb, not wanting to explain that a significant amount of the population sees grace as the celebrity savior scientist who rocky keeps as a controversially young trophy wife and publicly lavishes in gifts
rereading asoiaf is just: "she breasted boobily down the stairs in a manner betraying her fully fleshed-out character, rich inner life, and complex motivations" like grrm how do you do it
I thought I needed a new laptop but nope, youtube is slowing down your PC if you have adblock on on any open tab...
To be very clear about this: CPUs aren't magical devices that can operate forever. They generate heat. They wear out over time. This happens faster when they're operating near capacity. This is not just an attempt to inconvenience you; this is an attempt to damage your property.
For the "crime" of not wanting to be tracked/have ads pissed into your eyeballs 24/7.
Even if you've paid for the "privilege" of the latter.
Fuck Google, and I hope they get sued into oblivion over this.
i see everyone in the notes talking about newpipe but nobody's talking about youtube alternatives for desktop
IF YOU USE A DESKTOP PC OR LAPTOP, TRY INVIDIOUS
https://invidious.io/
it is a free, open-source alternative YouTube front-end. in addition to not having ads, it has other great QoL features like a download button. try one of the several instances on that link up there ^^^^
I just wish they could be sued for that. They actually have no right to do it.
I don't understand how this front-end work and I don't think I would, but if you have someone who can understand (like my partner, probably) you should use it. Since the prices of the spare parts for PC and laptops get skyrocket, especially GPU, CPU and RAM, you guys should be very careful. Replacement is costly, and for me, just as for a lot of others lost their PC is not just unacceptable, for me, whose activities and big pack of quality time and recreation tied directly to it will cause a breakdown and can potentially lead to something way worse. A lot of ppl would say it is stupid addiction - I'll just tell those ppl to go check their privileges again.
I'm not often leave the house due to my chronic conditions and most of my world exist around my partner, my dolls and my laptop. For me lost of one of these three whales of my life would be... I couldn't say not optimal. It would be catastrophic. So for all those disabled folk like me: please, don't use YouTube or use it with this front-end if you could. Because I noticed how it is actually boiling your CPU first hand. I had YouTube tab open for some time and my laptop was warming severely even though we just get all the hardware maintenance and I have an extra cooling thing for it. As soon as I closed the tab the boiling stopped. Now I know why.

Ideas are cooking for my pride outfit.
Oh boy have I pissed off the transphobes with this one.
@copperbadge this seems up your alley
If the system ain't broke, don't fix it, I guess! Accounting may not be the oldest profession, but someone had to keep the books for them.
I mean, in theory I know that Excel is based on the structure of earlier accounting technology that's been around for hundreds of years -- what do we think we did to track commerce before computers? -- but it still kind of blows my mind to, for example, look at my ancestor's journal from a whaling voyage in 1770 and see spreadsheets in the back.
According to the book I'm reading, proto-Cuneiform writing seems to have actually started as spreadsheets to keep track of resources rather than as a way to record language or express ideas.
The administrators of that extremely early city had to keep track of lots of things, and doing this by memory alone was a nightmare. These spreadsheets were devised as a solution to that as an evolution of an earlier system that used clay tokens and balls.
Spreadsheets are older than written language as we currently understand it.

A German regional court has ruled that Google is directly liable for the content of its AI search overviews. According to the court, previou
Let’s fucking go
This is HUGE.
1. The court holds Google responsible for statements made by its AI, considering them Google's statements (search engines have limited liability for results in their engine as they're the words of other sites/companies/people), meaning when their AI lies/hallucinates they're liable for the defamation/harm resulting from those statements.
2. Google's defense that customers are generally aware of the lack of reliability and are responsible for fact checking was dismissed. As the court pointed out, that would "significantly diminish" AI Search's stated purpose and it can't be distinguished from Google's business practices/statements as a search tool.
3. Studies have found about 91% of Google's everyday AI responses are accurate, leaving millions of searches per HOUR with potential liability for falsehoods. 56% of correct responses weren't supported by the sources the AI listed. Both of which mean Google is now liable for a LOT more AI "errors."
4. Google was held liable for 80% of court costs in this case and this precedent is expected to reverberate around the world. This is a massive shift from the 3rd-party search provider role Google has previously played and it comes right as they've tied ALL searches to their AI search.
TL;DR Google reeeeeally stepped in it this time.
5. If the words are Google's, this solidifies the position of universities who demand that all answers from AI are fully cited. If all the in-line citations now have to be (Google, 2026), that's going to make it obvious when someone's trying to use Google as a source. There's still the difficulty with people who are academically dishonest by trying to pass off the AI writing as their own. 6. 91% accuracy is officially too low to use as a source of references, which means the AI can't be used as a source of references either. This makes it less legitimate for such purposes than Wikipedia of all places (Wikipedia might need date/time proof of when it was accessed for the reference to be valid, but at least it is possible to prove the link existed at a particular date and time). 7. This will help encourage the rollout of courses on how to avoid AI search for students who need academic accuracy, because it's statistically not good enough to use. 8. This strengthens the case intellectual property authors have against Google in the EU, as this is proof that an intellectual property transfer took place.

Imagine if we did the “public libraries are punk” thing for other subcultures. Imagine if people made shirts that said “Soup kitchens are grunge” or “Mixed Use Urbanism is Juggalo”.
SAM REID CALLING OMEGAVERSE "VERY URSULA LE GUIN"
OK, but, here's the thing. It is. If you read the Hainish cycle you'll see stuff that's basically in the same vein as omegaverse. We got a planet where the women greatly outnumber the men and the men are kept in castles because there might only be two dudes in a village. We got a planet where everyone only gets gendered when they're in heat and is agender otherwise. ABO would fit right in.
if le guin were coming up in writing now she’d be doing the weirdest most genderfuckiest transgender shit you’ve ever seen

I’m glad that OP:
1) Figured this out.
2) Shared so others can learn from their mistake.
