*Though, this really only applies to more smaller tasks (such as doing the dishes). Giving very specific instructions for more complicated tasks can confuse and bewilder us more.
** And yes, ADHDers can take things literally too. Its not much of an issue for us as autistic folks though.
I was extremely lucky as a child with ADHD to have a mother who loved me more than she was inconvenienced by me, and so worked very hard with me to overcome this kind of thing.
When I was young, she would make lists for me that basically outlined “How To Do The Thing”
She would tell me to get ready in the morning, and I had a little list in my room that said, (I am going by memory here)
Put on the Clothes on Your Chair (we picked outfits the night before)
Put your pajamas under your pillow
Brush your teeth
Brush your hair
Put on your shoes
Ask mom for any permission slips (yes, I did this every morning. It was just easier, and often reminded me I had one in my backpack that was due two days from now or some shit)
Put your lunch in your backpack
You get the idea. It made it so Mom didn’t have to nag me every five seconds and get impatient with me, and it made it so I ALWAYS had a list to go back to about what “getting ready” meant. When I’ve had a lot of trouble with my ADHD, from time to time, as sometimes it seems to come in waves, I’ve come back to this, and made MYSELF lists for “How To DO The Thing”
So like a list for “You Need to Do Your Laundry” might look like
Gather the clothes in your hamper
Gather the clothes on your floor
Gather any clothes in the bathroom
Check for socks by the bedside
Check for sweaters in the living room (yes, I AM a disaster. I KNOW)
What do you have coming up this week that you need a special outfit for? Throw in anything for that.
put laundry in SET PHONE TIMER FOR 55 MINUTES.
I have a bunch of little lists like these (sometimes even still for getting ready) and they are one of my TOP ADHD hacks. I find “feeling like a together adult” to be its own reward in my old age, but in the past I’ve incentivized myself by saying “If I do this for 2 weeks in a row, then obviously it’s a long term thing and so I deserve to buy some pretty stationary to write this on” or stuff like that!
Those of you who follow me all the time know that my basic credo is “ADHD is a totally workable thing, you just have to figure out how to use it.” and this is one of the tools in my toolbox for it.
