Sure Feels Good To Love Someone

“You thinkin’ of adopting today?”

Louis shakes his head. “No, not today I’m afraid,” he says. “We’ve always said we wouldn’t get a dog until-”

He stops, suddenly, clarity hitting him like ice water to the face. They’ve been together for nearly four years now, living together for two. Why shouldn’t “until” become “now”?

“Until?”

Louis shakes his head, looking down at the puppy in his lap. It seems to have curled itself even tighter, but one dark eye is peering up at Louis, soft and warm. His heart pounds.

“Until now, apparently,” he says.

Niall’s face breaks into a wide grin. “Good choice,” he says. “You’re picking the white one, I presume?”

Louis smiles down at the bundle of fur in his lap. “He’s picked me, mostly,” he says. “But I suppose it’s mutual.”

“Are you telling me that your proposal went–like viral or something?”

“Well–I mean–if I had to say–viral? I would maybe call it–popular amongst–”

“Amongst who, Harry? The entire city of Chicago?”

“Ummm–well, maybe viral is a better word for it because it’s definitely not just Chicago. So uh–I guess Zayn doesn’t really tell Enes everything?”

Louis narrows his eyes even though no one is in the room to see it. “Why?”

“Because he tweeted about it? And linked Sam’s instagram post. And so some–sports people? Seem to have retweeted that? Some sports people who are not just in Chicago?”

Louis looks at the post briefly before quickly swiping out. “Jesus fucking Christ.”

“I mean, I turned off my notifs on everything, so I’m not really sure anymore–” Harry trails off. “Did you know Enes knew LeBron James?”

Oh god. His chest tightens, and he feels like he can’t catch a breath. Is this what dying feels like? “Please tell me this is not a relevant question,” he manages to say in a strangled voice.

“Mmm. It’s a little relevant.”

Louis starts pacing the room, his mind a tumble of thoughts that he can’t piece together into a coherent sentence.

“Do you remember seeing Jennifer Hudson there? Because I don’t remember seeing her and–”

“Please just–stop talking.”

“You think Harry wants that?”

“Dunno. Maybe. Wanna make him happy.” Harry takes advantage of the red light he’s pulled up to turn and look properly at Louis’ face. He’s not even looking in Harry’s direction though, focused instead on something out of his side window, head drooped, mindlessly playing with the string of his hoodie between his fingers, lost in his own world somewhere. For some reason, it makes Harry’s spine straighten.

“Because he’s your best mate?” Harry questions carefully.

“He’s my boyfriend.”

He couldn’t have heard him right. “What?”

Louis releases a deep breath, still not turning around. Harry wonders who he thinks he’s talking to right now. “He’s so pretty. Want to kiss him all day long. And buy him a big house and give him presents and marry him.”

Or

The one where Harry is in love with his best friend Louis but doesn’t think he stands a chance until some wisdom teeth and a rather unusual confession might just change his mind.

Just Say Yes

“Well, given that I’ve run all out of options - I’d like to propose,” Louis says with a sharp grin. ‘Propose what?’ Harry questions, frown on his face. ‘Honestly Louis, you’re in trouble here and we have to find a way that’ll allow you to stay. Now’s not the time to be cryptic.’ “I’m not being cryptic – I’m proposing, here.” He sits down on one knee and quickly fashions a ring out of the hair-tie he’s still got wrapped around his wrist. “Harry Styles – please marry me and make an honest, British citizen out of me.”

“You’re never g-.”

“Harry’s home!”

Liam’s face soured and he rolled his eyes.

“I never know things first and I know I knew this first. Who told you?”

“No one. I saw him while I was running.” Liam’s eyes softened and he did not need pity. Louis started running after his breakup with Nick and he did not need Liam starting in on him about being proud he had taken his advice seriously and found healthy coping skills. Especially after what those coping skills lead to. “I attacked him, Liam. Like, I saw him and then I was in his arms. I’m the most embarrassing human on earth.”

He took a deep breath, and gripped Harry’s hand.

He wasn’t sure what he expected; an electric shock through his system, all of the clouds parting so the sun could shine down on them, or maybe some kind of confirmation that this was it.

What he got was warmth, a gentle grip, and a slight shiver down his spine. He still knew.

Louis and Harry know that they’re meant for each other. When Harry proposes, Louis doesn’t think he’s ever been so happy until he realises Harry’s ex-boyfriend is only a few tables over, and maybe instead of a marriage, it’s time for a breakup.

Harry mumbled again in agreement. “Marry you in every country I can.”

“It’s really not that complicated,” Harry explained. “We get married and in a year or so we can file for divorce. No big deal. It’s not like you can’t wait a little while to find someone else anyway.”

Louis was going to pay a bus driver to accidentally run into Harry. A concussion would be fine. Obviously a couple broken limbs. That’s something that’s not complicated.

Hiding his queer identity isn’t so hard until he attracts the attention of a particular soldier. It’s all lies and secrets until the war is finally over.
