i've been watching tlog and having to skip all her scenes because they just make me feel sad and unpleasant wrt how meanspirited the writing feels.

that said, i really like how you talk about her + the stuff you've said abt liking "bad" trans characters, and it would be really cool to hear your take on her + whether you have any headcanons about her in general

i jokingly posted a while ago that, because of the town's general acceptance of babs and the fact that dr. mikos (the surgeon originally scheduled to do her bottom surgery) is explicitly named as "one of the best," royston vasey is a trans sanctuary city. obviously this is not explicitly true, but it does bear thinking about (why would one of the best sex reassignment doctors be in a tiny nowhere town, not a major hospital in a major city?)

to me, enjoying babs as a character requires some mental gymnastics—clearly, in the 90s/00s, the gents considered trans women to be men in dresses. even though they use she/her pronouns for babs throughout, and "allow" her to self-identify as a woman, every comedic aspect of her character boils down to "ha ha, man in dress"

that being said, i still love her, because i have transfem friends that look and sound like she does (i mean, not Northern, but yk). i don't find the jokes about her surgery to be funny, because i do talk about the gory details of my transition with my trans friends. i see her as a relatable, tragic, doomed character whose story is being played for laughs.

whether or not the creators intended me to see her that way is irrelevant. death of the author. i feel no need to agree with the gents on every detail of their own assessment of their work. in fact, i'll make more of their characters trans and they can't stop me. geoff's transmasc and that's why he's so desperately trying to fit in with the boys. ollie's transmasc and that's why he's misogynist and upset about his wife leaving him for a lesbian. charlie and stella are t4t. this doesn't change a single aspect of their relationship and i don't care. they're t4t.

but back to babs! i think she moved to vasey because the city doll life was too much for her. i think she likes going to bed early. i think her cab smells like geraniums. i think she keeps taking out personal ads in the paper and eventually finds a nice man to marry her, properly, in a wedding dress that fits her.

(i choose to completely disregard the 2017 specials—those are a level of transphobia i cannot begin to cope with. guys...)
