I have loved and followed today’s since the 1.0 era but a few things in these press tours have raised my eye brows. It does feel in this corner that most blogs are glazing and afraid to share anything even slightly critical so there is no thoughtful discussion. It made me think of your blog (and WTO) and how excellent some of your discussion points were. Just thought I’d let you know

I really appreciate this, anon, although I have to say I see my mutuals be critical thinkers all the time including in the last few days! I desperately miss WTO.

But I have some pent up thoughts!

On Law: We like to oooh and ahh over wealth and celebrities and high fashion but there’s an element of suspension of disbelief there. Part of that is fictionalizing real people so that they “read” more as characters in a romance or drama to us, that we can have those experiences vicariously through them. The disturbing levels of wealth and the structures that enable wealth and celebrity and high fashion (and thus that enable poverty) are almost completely ignored, or at least compartmentalized into near oblivion. The fairy godmother appears out of thin air, the dress appears out of thin air, the shoes, etc etc. Those have always been the stories that we want—and that Power wants us to want because those stories mystify inequality and sustain it. Occasionally, something happens that makes the compartmentalizing and suspension of disbelief impossible, at least for some of us, like Zendaya’s Smart Water campaign, or when Tom said he wants to be a benevolent landlord, or Lupita’s De Beers campaign, Taylor Swift’s private jet, or this Law thing.

Law has no sprezzatura. He’s constantly reminding people of the structures and systems behind the glamour - which includes using people/relationships to build a brand and turn that brand into wealth. That’s what the “ick” is.

That’s what I think, anyhow.
