Well, a month has come and gone, and my latest project is complete!
I have never expressed my open liking of Ethoslab - I'm more of a Tango and Jimmy fan, if my past binds are any example. More often than not, I lurk in his videos and in the tumblr tags which is how I got to find out of the Etho zine project by @ethozine.
When I saw the finished work, I instantly knew this would be my next project after binding the MCYT Couture zine.
Continuing in my experimentation, this bind is made as a split-boards bind and despite some hiccups I found myself really liking the result! The hinges open without much pushback and the book feels so sturdy. I think I might have a new binding style...
I also added some cheekiness to the project. I used the fanmade emojis made by the zine team to decorate the front and back endpapers. The result? Mini-Ethos inviting me as I flip the covers!! (with the exception of ice cream Etho. noooooooo). To all the fanartists who made these, you all rock!
And finally, I had a sudden thought at the last minute as to the design of the cover label. In Malaysia, the bus networks here used to have these old tickets that are now fondly remembered as memorabilia. I looked at them one day and realized that these would be perfect to bedight the zine! So I drafted a cover label based on these bus tickets and printed them onto some leftover paper. It looks so beautiful!
Plus, the combination of the label, black bookcloth, red strip, and green-yellow endpapers create an almost Japanese aesthetic to the whole cover, which kinda fits as Ethoslab's skin is Kakashi from Naruto (and that his favourite color is green too!).

This AU idea is about Joel's HC10 base being trapped in an 'other-side' dimension that intersects with the real world, and the hermits being able to sense his presence and vice versa even if they can't see each other. It is smalletho themed, because Etho is the first/only one who tries to reach out to Joel.
I gave up on this idea as soon as I had thought of it, so it means a lot to me that you think it is interesting. And also didn't know Ris posted art of it, since I was not tagged. (For anyone reading this, you are free to @ tag me in anything as I like seeing what you guys have to share!)

HC10 Joel whose base accidentally becomes an "other-side" otherworld dimension that intersects with the real world. Time flows the same, and the things he builds also appear in the real world, but only within his base.
Anything he does outside of his base, it doesn't happen, doesn't exist. No one can see or hear him, and vice versa, even if they are standing in the same place, because they're on different dimensions. But sometimes Joel/other hermits can feel a presence, not really like a ghost, but the feeling that someone called your name in a noisy crowd.
Etho is the only one to investigate/experiment and figure out what's going on. At first Joel doesn't understand what's going on, but Etho somehow proves to Joel that he's stuck in a other-side dimension alone. They manage some very simple communication, somehow, but it's only possible because they are familiar with each other's way of thinking (Double Life soulmate connection). Something that constantly looks like coincidence, but they always trust the signs the other gives nonetheless. And somehow it's always interpreted correctly.
One of the signs/communication to each other is music. And that is why Joel sings a lot in his base or while building.
In the end, they have to do some Portal2 Co-op style thing to get Joel back to the real world, but maybe it's really dangerous or they only have one chance to do it. It has to be dramatic, highly risky, maybe it's a choice of saving one guy vs the entire server.
Doesn't matter what the ending is, it's probably a good(ish) end, but not without some kind of loss.
Scartho to me is 50% based on in-game character + fan imagination lore: Etho is someone who doesn't like to look like he needs help, doesn't actually want to be seen as "washed" or physically weak. But Scar is the only person who sees through that, he knows how it's like to want to look strong, or at least normal enough that people won't worry.
Because Scar is the same (see: disability, being undermined by others). So he won't call Etho out on it, but he will look out for Etho and sneak in ways to help that Etho can more readily accept.
Scartho works because they understand and respect each other based on personal experience/preferences that align.
The other 50% is based on more meta/"real life", in stream interactions: They have really good friendship, joke around without fear and like equals. Like Etho being a lot more willing to talk about himself around Scar because of the genuine interest shown.
I think it's because Scar is also equally willing to talk about himself/interests in exchange. And they can make more personal jokes at each other because of that (eg. Etho-specific Canadian jokes, Scar health related jokes). It's as if they're genuinely close friends who remember specific things about each other. It makes a comforting and natural atmosphere when they interact.
This is just my idea of Scartho which I enjoy and make fan works about. I can talk about them forever, but it is what I will share for now.
