Mentalist oc thats a Cyborh yay

essentially a timeline/TLDR of Armageddon, with some added context that was left out because i either didn't want to add it to the original prologue, or because i completely forgot about it.

originally was supposed to be accompanied by images, but i decided not to and just post as-is. this also acts as a way for me to date things.

DISCLAIMER: this is my own, made-up backstory to the R.E.P.O. game. I tried to follow some of the major lore details, but everything else is just my own ideas. Also, this timeline was initially created prior to the Cosmetic Update, so some of these things might become "outdated", but hey, that's one of the main reason why this is an AU in the first place!

LONG BEFORE ARMAGEDDON:

before the 2070s

-technology is advancing faster than people can catch up; especially robotics and automation, which were starting to become mainstream and replacing many human jobs. Aratal automation is a powerhouse in this field, and would make the Semibots, a small robot with revolutionary generative AI designed primary to be aids and companions to the young, elderly and disabled. Some people start thinking that semibots (and other AI) are starting to become sentient (not sapient yet, though). 

- The Museum of Human Arts comes in at this point. The last public exhibition was about semibots and how the perception of them reflected the general perception of automation and robotics. The museum officially closed in 2032, though nobody is sure as to why since that part’s been lost to time. 

-magic is held by the rich and powerful in “Magic Strongholds”. Claimed to be too dangerous and volatile, however keeping this magic concentrated would only further contribute to its volatility and danger. Either way, only a select number of people are able to deal in magic

- Swiftbroom is a well-known magic school where magic is taught. Also is one of said magic strongholds.

-underground cities are starting to exist. Some are experiments in space habitation, some are meant to solve overpopulation issues, some are vanity projects. Keep this part in mind.

JUST BEFORE ARMAGEDDON:

2070s to early-mid 2080s

-Taxman Hedsman is the current CEO of Aratal Automations. Not much info regarding his real name or personal life.

-Dumgolf Hedsman is taxman’s brother who believed magic and technology should co-exist if human society were to progress. Managed to get into swiftbroom and make his way up to headmaster.

- Headman Manor is the hedsmen’s family home and where their father lived. Their father was often called “the Headman” (This is admittedly the only way I could add headman manor to the lore of the AU).

-Ormeed virus is discovered by Mcjanneck Station from the permafrost. Not as deadly or contagious at this point; more or less like a bad flu with a fairly high (95%) survival rate. only a small nearby village has it.

ARMAGEDDON ITSELF

Armageddon starts on sept. 2087, and ends some time in 2090. Has four distinct stages.

Stage 1: red moon incident.

Dumgolf performs the first lunar protection spell of the school year in order to help maintain the magic. Something goes wrong; either dumgolf did something on purpose or maybe the magic reached critical mass and could not be held back. The moon turns red, and the first wave of monsters come. This burst of magic causes all other magic strongholds to burst. Now magic is everywhere.

Stage 2: robot uplifting.

All robots with AI become sentient or sapient thanks to magic free-flowing everywhere. Man vs machine ensues, though some humans/machines try to protect each other from the opposing sides. All semibots became sapient at this point. This war lasts for three years.

Stage 3: Ormeed virus.

The Ormeed Virus get affected by magic, causing three strains to come out: the common/lesser strain (original, but more contagious), the deadly/greater strain (much higher death rate), and the mutational/monster strain (the one that mutates you, aka the 2nd wave of monsters). There is evidence that Mcjanneck was still functioning up till 2097, though it is unknown as to who inhabited the station or what happened to them.

Stage 4: nuclear war.

All the world’s nukes were launched. Currently unclear as to why; some speculate it may have been one last attempt to rid the earth of monsters, knowing that the underground cities/settlements are safe from the resulting fallout. some argue over whether this was human-decided or decided by AI. Popular theories suggest that the radiation, combined with Ormeed and magic, causes one final wave of monsters.

POST-ARMAGEDDON

Early 2100s to mid 2420s

-the underground cities are what’s left of humanity. Generally self-sustaining, but issues begin to arise. They begin to then start the effort to “take back the surface” (aka resource gathering, research, etc). They also figured out how magic made AI sentient/sapient, and how to shove a soul inside a machine.

-Operation Repossession begins. Large armored vehicles (Armored Surface Vehicle, aka ASVs) traverse the surface with semibot crews. Some trucks were true (sapient) AI, some were ex-humans. Semibots were similar, with the latter group of criminals serving life sentences and people chosen for depopulation programs. The exact job they did vary.

- the human group comes into play here. They were the humans that were part of depopulation programs, however instead of robotization they were sent directly to the surface itself. These people would despise semibot not just due to pre-existing negative views, but also due to being viewed as a direct threat to their survival. 

-taxman survives as an ASV. quickly became infamous, with his infamy being known by the underground settlements. As time went on, his sanity began to deteriorate.

-civilization began to return to the surface around 2300s, and Operation Repossession's role in the realm of the surface would slowly become more and more obsolete. Many of the ASVs would end up leaving, entering jobs that were starting to spring up as a result of civilization returning. Taxman was the last ASV in the operation, and was eventually forced to leave when the hub was disconnected. the human group would also begin to fizzle out as a result of civilization’s return.

MODERN ERA

Current year (as of the first story): 2525

-AI now are viewed as equals among humans. Many ethics laws are created regarding both their creation and soul-transference. Semibots and their derivatives remain the most populous of these AI races, especially outside of human civilization.

-monsters are now starting to be viewed less as “mindless beasts” and more “just another organism”. Sapient monsters exist, and they too are beginning to be viewed as equals among humans. However, many monsters and other post-Armageddon life remain understudied.
