It’s time to once and for all start separating the creator from their art — and I'm not talking about taking the credits away.

Cancel culture encourages the suspension of someone from current and future projects as a punishment, but it does not diminish their merits in the past. No one cuts actors out of films or bans films featuring them just because, years later, that single actor did something wrong.

I can understand when the creator themself makes their art destructive, harmful, or offensive to others. That's what they do. A person can make mistakes, but not their art. It remains impartial and inviolable.

Allow me to also assure you that you don't have to take credits (and even characters themselves) away just because "enjoying [bad person] 's art would make you a [bad person]'s supporter", no.

No matter what the creator has done (or, God forbid, will do), their characters belongs to them simply because they created them. This is part of the fandom’s history, and we can't change this fact. Even no matter how hard we try to change a character, no matter how far we stray from the canon, we (should) always know who the original idea belongs to.

If you enjoy the creation, keep showing at least some basic respect for its creator as well.

Stop projecting your personal attitude towards a creator onto their art. Stop rewriting history that wasn't written by you, as they do now in wartime. Stop tearing down monuments you yourselves erected just because "they don't deserve it anymore". Stop devaluing the past you didn't put your soul into.
