The evil yuppies of my parents’ generation greeting neoliberalism as this huge liberation day that gave them all sorts of new personal freedoms (some genuinely substantial like desegregation and affirmative action for middle class people of color) feels so ridiculous and insane to me in retrospect. Every personal freedom that they thought of as a huge gain is now a gigantic burden of social costs privatized and individualized to us. Our lives are all responsibility and no freedom, and definitely no prospect of a tolerable career ending in a comfortable retirement. Because demonic suburbanites helped the Fortune 500 accomplish a crusade of privatization and deregulation and austerity and continue to do it to this day, we have to waste so much of our time budgeting, couponing, planning meals, watching for food borne outbreaks, commuting, avoiding hospitalization, avoiding imprisonment, and managing debt. And if you don’t have money to spend in the little soulless Disneyland oases of suburbia the store owners will follow you around itching to call the police on you and enforce the strict regime of segregation between the neoliberal Volksgemeinschaft and the undeserving undesirables. And these are the people who want you to sob and wail whenever the next riot breaks out and one of them is rightfully beaten and robbed by crowds of the people whose inheritance of public wealth was privatized by these overfed suburban parasites and their Epsteinite imperialist friends
